This wonderful old map of Hell's Kitchen & Midtown West neighbourhoods of Manhattan was originally published in 1872. It was created by John Bute Holmes.
This map covers what is now known as Hell's Kitchen (or Clinton) and parts of West Midtown in New York City. But, if that wasn't interesting enough, the map also shows the farmland that Hell's Kitchen was built upon.
It is a little hard to believe today, but at the start of the 19th century most of Manhattan was still farmland. Here, the map shows that Hell's Kitchen used to be the Hermitage Farm and Norton Estate.
Hell's Kitchen was historically predominantly made up of Irish immigrants who found refuge in America during the Great Potato Famine.
This map runs roughly from Seventh Ave on the right to Hudson River on the left, and from 39th street at the bottom to 48th at the top.
This map looks great at all sizes: 18x12in (46x30.5cm), 24x14in (60x35cm), 36x24in (61x91.5cm), 43x26in (110x66.5cm), 50x30in (125x75cm), 60x35in (150x90cm) and 70x42in (180x105cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 150in (380cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (61x91.5cm) version of this map.
The fifth listing image shows an example of my map personalisation service.
Please note the unframed 24x14in (60x35cm) map has white edges around the map. These edges can help you with framing, or if you don’t need them they are very easy to snip off with scissors. All other maps, including the framed maps, look exactly like the listing images.
If you’re looking for something slightly different, another option would be this amazing map of the New York City Subway by Stephen Voorhies in 1954.
The locations on this map include: Hudson River, 11th Avenue, 10th Avenue, 9th Avenue, 8th Avenue and 7th Avenue.

This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone interested in Hells Kitchen & Midtown West neighbourhoods of Manhattan or the pastoral history of these Manhattan neighbourhoods.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
