This old, rare and delightfully bright and interesting map shows the state of the world towards the end of World War 2 in 1944.
These "Dated Events" maps were a series of maps created by Toronto-based artist Stanley Turner. They would be updated periodically with the latest information from the War. The maps were licensed and published by various publishers and companies around the world.
As you can probably imagine, if you didn't catch an update on the radio or newspaper, it was fairly hard to keep up with World War 2 from home. So maps like these were a great way of staying up to date.
The map is covered in fascinating bits of info - zoom into the listing images and read a few of them! The legend in the bottom right corner will certainly help with decoding it, and which notes pertain to the Allies and which to the Nazis, Italians and Japanese.
This map is an unusual size - it's extremely wide - and would make a fantastic statement piece above a sofa, table, mantelpiece or staircase. The three smaller sizes (18x9, 24x11 and 36x17 inches) all come with white edges that can be easily snipped off (or they will help you with framing!). The larger sizes, and all framed maps, are all printed and pre-cut perfectly to size and look just like the listing images.
It looks magnificent at every size and you'll always be able to read the writing on the map. I can print very large versions of this map up to 4 meters (160 inches) wide. Get in touch if you're looking for very large maps, or if you want me to check if your town/city is visible on this map.
This would make a wonderful birthday, work leaving, housewarming, Christmas or Father's Day gift for someone interested in World War 2, or perhaps as an educational aid!
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes our maps pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame. We use super-clear acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in our frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
