Published in 1582 by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg, this is the oldest full, true map of Jerusalem. If Shakespeare ever visited Jerusalem, this is what it would've looked like. This map was first published in Civitates Orbis Terrarum - the Cities of the World - which was a cartographical masterpiece featuring 546 maps.
Originally handcoloured almost 450 years ago, this is one of the finest examples of this map that I've ever seen.
This map looks great at all sizes from 12x16 inches (30x40cm), to 16x20 inches (40x50cm) and 24x36 inches (60x90cm). But it looks even better when printed large. I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 80 inches (200cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x18 inch (60x45cm) version of this map.
The fifth listing image shows an example of my map personalisation service.
Of course, Jerusalem back in the 1500s looked rather different than the Jerusalem of today. Take a look at the detailed images and see if you can recognise any of the streets or landmarks! To help you, there's a key in the bottom right corner of the map with numbering for 48 important buildings.
The map looks at the Old City of Jerusalem from a vantage point to the east of the city, probably the Mount of Olives. In the foreground is the eastern wall and the Temple Mount - in the distance, the Jaffa Gate.
Most of the 48 buildings are of Christian importance - even though at the time, in the 1500s, the area was dominated by Islam and the Ottoman Empire. The figures in the foreground, and the minarets dotted around the city, acknowledge this.
This would make a wonderful birthday, work leaving, housewarming, Christmas or Father's Day gift for someone from Jerusalem or who is interested in the history of the Holy Land.
If you are looking for an old map of the whole region of
Palestine/Israel, look at this map by John Speed.
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes our maps pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame. We use super-clear acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in our frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.
