WeiterlesenAugust Macke’s Arden on Lake Thun, painted in 1914, turns a garden landscape into a densely interlocking field of colour. Vegetation, path and planted pot remain recognisable, yet none is described naturalistically. Instead, strong passages of emerald and olive green meet lemon yellow, deep blue, terracotta and coral pink, their shifting shapes carrying the eye vertically through the composition. The brightest forms gather near the centre like sunlight breaking through leaves, while darker colour blocks create a shallow, enveloping depth.
The painting belongs to the final year of Macke’s life and reflects the experiments in colour and form that made him one of the leading artists associated with Der Blaue Reiter. Like other painters connected with German Expressionism, Macke moved away from faithful description, but his work is often distinguished by its clarity, warmth and interest in the rhythms of modern experience. Here, the landscape is not abandoned so much as reorganised: observed nature becomes a sequence of lucid colour relationships, balanced between representation and abstraction.
A closer look
In the lower left, a terracotta-coloured pot provides one of the scene’s clearest anchors. Its patterned surface and exuberant plant introduce compact accents of red, orange and pink amid the surrounding greens. These warmer notes recur higher in the composition, where scattered coral and rust-coloured patches suggest flowers, leaves or sunlit growth. Rather than isolating individual botanical forms, Macke allows them to merge into the larger decorative structure.
The centre is dominated by an angular burst of yellow, edged by fresh green and cooler blue. It is the painting’s principal concentration of light, but also a compositional hinge: forms seem to radiate from it before dispersing into smaller patches. At the upper right, a deep blue area acts as a cool counterweight to this luminosity, while dense dark greens along the left lend the brighter colours additional intensity.
Towards the lower right, a warm brown path opens a narrow route into the garden. Yet conventional recession is repeatedly interrupted by overlapping colour planes and softened contours. The result is a deliberately shallow space in which foreground and background press towards the same surface. Visible, rhythmic strokes animate the foliage, while the alternation of crisp divisions and fluid transitions prevents the geometry from becoming rigid.
Context and significance
Der Blaue Reiter emerged within the wider European avant-garde at a moment when artists were reconsidering the descriptive obligations of painting. Colour could operate independently of local appearance; perspective could be compressed; and landscape could be structured according to visual rhythm rather than strict realism. Arden on Lake Thun belongs to that transformation, yet its radical simplification never loses contact with sensory experience. The garden remains full of heat, shade and proliferating plant life, even as it approaches a mosaic of coloured forms.
Created in 1914, the work has the added poignancy of belonging to Macke’s last year. Its vitality lies not in dramatic narrative but in sustained visual movement: yellow passes into green, warm earth tones interrupt cooler passages, and small fragments cohere into an abundant whole. It is a particularly concentrated example of Macke’s ability to make colour itself the organising force of a landscape.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 16x20in (40x50cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
