WeiterlesenPierre-Joseph Redouté’s Choix des plus belles fleurs, plate 010, published in 1827, arranges several flowering stems against an open, pale ground. A full violet bloom anchors the composition, its densely layered petals gathered around a warm yellow centre; above it, a smaller pink flower introduces a gentler note, while buds and serrated green leaves carry the eye outwards. The asymmetry feels entirely natural, as though the specimens have been placed for close study rather than organised into a formal bouquet.
Redouté was among the most admired botanical artists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, bringing exact observation to a field in which scientific description and visual refinement were closely connected. Choix des plus belles fleurs belongs to the flourishing French tradition of botanical publication fostered by horticultural collecting and encyclopaedic natural history. Redouté’s particular distinction lay in making plants legible without making them lifeless: structures remain clear, yet petals retain softness, weight and individual character.
A closer look
The largest flower occupies the central foreground, but its colouring is far from uniform. Violet deepens through the folded petals and softens where the light catches their curved edges, producing a gradual sense of volume. At the heart of the bloom, minute yellow marks create a finely textured disc—a concentrated point of warmth within the cooler purple. The petals overlap in tight succession, their varied direction preventing the flower from appearing mechanically symmetrical.
Above and to the left, the pink bloom is more open and lightly constructed. Its petals curl subtly inwards at their tips, while the yellow centre repeats the colour of the larger flower’s heart and gives the arrangement a quiet visual coherence. Emerging buds at the upper right preserve the sense of a plant observed through successive stages of growth: closed forms, opening petals and a fully expanded flower appear together within the same compact study.
The leaves provide a firmer counterpoint to the softness of the blossoms. Their pointed, serrated margins are sharply articulated, and fine veins divide the green surfaces into delicate networks. Overlapping stems and foliage create shallow layers of depth, yet the generous unmarked background prevents the composition from becoming crowded. In the lower corner, the botanical inscription includes the name “Aster Chinensis”, integrating identification into the otherwise spare plate without distracting from the specimen itself.
Context and significance
Botanical illustration of this period served several audiences at once. Such plates could assist the study and recognition of plants, record specimens valued by gardeners and collectors, and satisfy a wider appetite for images in which nature was ordered with clarity. Redouté was especially well suited to this intersection of knowledge and pleasure. His flowers are not decorative abstractions: distinctions between leaf and petal, bud and open bloom, edge and vein are maintained with disciplined precision.
Yet this precision never becomes clinical. Gentle tonal transitions give the petals an almost tactile delicacy, while the isolated arrangement allows each contour to remain distinct. The plate’s enduring appeal lies in that balance: it is sufficiently exact to reward botanical attention, but composed with the sensitivity of a flower portrait, turning a small group of stems into an intimate study of colour, structure and growth.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
