contratto-vintage-drinks-poster-by-leonetto-cappiello-1922
Contratto Vintage Drinks Poster by Leonetto Cappiello, 1922

Leonetto Cappiello’s Contratto, created in 1922, turns a beverage advertisement into an exuberant piece of visual theatre. Against a nearly unbroken black ground, a smiling woman raises an enormous, froth-crowned glass above her head. Her sweeping red scarf, orange-red bodice and broad, flower-strewn skirt seem to flare outwards with the force of the gesture. The palette is concentrated and emphatic: hot reds and oranges blaze against the darkness, while pale foam and golden liquid draw attention to the product at the composition’s summit.

Cappiello was among the defining figures of early twentieth-century poster design. Rather than relying on elaborate scenes or lengthy explanation, he developed advertisements around a single memorable character, object or gesture, isolated through bold contour and startling colour contrast. Such immediacy was particularly effective in the crowded urban spaces for which commercial posters were conceived. Contratto belongs to the lively graphic culture of the 1920s, yet its economy remains remarkably modern: brand, figure and glass can be grasped almost instantaneously.

A closer look

The raised glass governs the entire design. Enlarged beyond natural scale, it occupies the upper part of the poster like a trophy, its warm golden contents becoming progressively paler towards the overflowing foam. Soft, irregular edges give the froth a lightness that contrasts with the crisp, flat treatment of the woman’s clothing. Her arms create strong upward diagonals, directing the eye from the compact figure towards the bright vessel.

Movement is carried through the costume. A vivid red scarf loops around the woman and streams away from her body, while the skirt spreads into a dark, bell-like form across the lower half of the composition. Golden floral motifs and fine linear accents enliven this broad area without weakening its silhouette. A glimpse of pale blue hair provides an unexpected cool note among the dominant reds, oranges and yellows. The woman’s curved smile and buoyant pose make the advertisement festive, but Cappiello avoids narrative clutter: there is no setting, furniture or surrounding crowd, only the essentials of celebration.

At the bottom, the name “CONTRATTO” appears in large, forceful lettering, anchoring the airborne energy above it. The typography is not treated as a caption tucked beneath an illustration; it forms the poster’s visual base. In the lower-right corner, the visible signature and abbreviated date, “Leonetto Cappiello 922”, identify the designer and year. Together, the monumental brand name and isolated figure establish a clear hierarchy designed to register at a distance.

Context and significance

Cappiello’s approach marked a shift away from the more densely decorative language associated with many late nineteenth-century advertisements. His posters frequently place an animated figure against a dark field, allowing colour and silhouette to do the work of recognition. In Contratto, the woman does not merely hold the drink: her entire body becomes part of its upward surge, from the expanding skirt to the scarf and lifted arms. The product is thus bound to a mood of effervescence without the need for explanatory detail.

The result is both commercial design and a concise study in graphic rhythm. Strong diagonals, flat colour and a sharply legible silhouette give the poster its immediate impact, while the floral skirt, blue hair and softly described foam reward closer attention. It is an especially spirited example of Cappiello’s ability to condense a brand identity into one theatrical, unforgettable gesture.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
