This is a minimalist topographical relief map of Japan, created by The Unique Maps Co. and enhanced with our trademarked Unique 3D process. With no labels, roads, or towns, the landforms themselves take center stage. Soft, raking light catches the crests of ridges and volcanic cones while fine shadows settle into river valleys, coastal inlets, and calderas, revealing the country’s famously dramatic terrain at a glance.

Across central Honshu, the Japanese Alps rise in a rugged sweep that reads immediately under light and shadow: the Northern Alps (Hida Mountains) with their serrated spine, the Central Alps (Kiso Mountains) cutting deep valleys like the Kiso and Kurobe, and the Southern Alps (Akaishi Mountains) lifting a high, blocky wall toward the sky. To the east, one unmistakable pyramid stands alone—Mount Fuji—its flanks descending toward Suruga Bay and the Izu Peninsula. The contrast between these highlands and the broad Kanto Plain and Kanto Plateau is striking: broad, gently modeled lowlands and river fans around Tokyo Bay sit in visual relief against the enclosing uplands, a classic expression of Japan’s tectonic rift zone and volcanic arc.

Northward, the spine of Tohoku emerges as parallel mountain belts: the long Ou Mountains drawing a central line down the region, with the Kitakami Range mirrored closer to the Pacific. Between them, intermontane basins and plains such as the Sendai area are picked out by softer, wider pools of shadow. Along the Sanriku coast, the relief map captures the intricate ria coastline—deep, narrow inlets slicing landward—each fjordlike valley made legible by fine bands of shade. Across the Tsugaru Strait, Hokkaido’s character shifts again: the Daisetsuzan massif and volcanic domes rise in a rugged core, the Hidaka Range runs like a folded ribbon down the southeast, and open lowlands such as the Ishikari and Tokachi Plains spread as broad, gently lit surfaces toward the coasts. The peninsulas of Shiretoko and Oshima jut cleanly into the sea, their mountainous backbones sharply etched by light.

Turn west and south along Honshu and you can trace the high back of the Chugoku Mountains, a long upland that separates the storm-facing San’in coast from the calmer, island-dotted Seto Inland Sea. Subtle gradations of shade distinguish the river-cut corridors through this plateau country, while the Inland Sea’s scatter of islands—Awaji among them—appears as a constellation of miniature ridges. On the Sea of Japan side, the Noto Peninsula projects boldly; on the Pacific side the Nobi Plain opens around Ise Bay, and the Kii Peninsula’s mountainous core presses close to the shore, its steep slopes revealed by tight, crisp shadows.

To the south, Shikoku is all mountain and gorge, its central range lifting a continuous crest above narrow coastal shelves. The Yoshino River cleaves across the island, its valley and the famous Oboke–Koboke gorges clearly incised in the relief. Beyond, Kyushu tells the story of Japan’s place on the Ring of Fire with dramatic clarity: the vast Aso caldera reads as a broad, shallow bowl ringed by high rims; the Kuju and Kirishima ranges are marked by clustered cones; and the Sakurajima volcano stands as a prominent, shadow-cast dome astride Kagoshima Bay. Around them, the Ariake and Shimabara areas show low-lying plains and peninsulas, their gently modeled surfaces emphasizing the contrast with the surrounding highlands. Farther southwest, the island arc continues as a stepping-stone chain, each islet a tiny uplift of rock and ridge trailing off the map’s edge.

For anyone who calls Japan home, who has hiked its alpine ridges, skied its powder valleys, soaked in its volcanic springs, or traced its intricate shorelines, this relief map is an invitation to revisit those landscapes with your fingertips. This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). Mein Standardrahmen ist ein Galerie-Stil-Rahmen aus schwarzem Eschenholz. Er ist einfach und sieht ziemlich modern aus. Mein Standardrahmen ist etwa 20 mm (0,8 Zoll) breit.

Ich verwende super-klares Acryl (Plexiglas/Acrylt) für das Glas des Rahmens. Es ist leichter und sicherer als Glas – und es sieht besser aus, da die Reflexion geringer ist.

Sechs Standardrahmenfarben sind kostenlos erhältlich (schwarz, dunkelbraun, dunkelgrau, Eiche, weiß und antikgold).

Die meisten Karten, Kunstwerke und Illustrationen sind auch als gerahmte Leinwand erhältlich. Wir verwenden matte (nicht glänzende) Baumwollleinwand, spannen sie über einen nachhaltig beschafften Buchenrahmen und 'schweben' dann das Stück innerhalb eines Holzrahmens. Das Endergebnis ist ziemlich schön, und es gibt keine Verglasung, die im Weg ist.

Alle Rahmen werden "bereit zum Aufhängen" geliefert, entweder mit einer Schnur oder Halterungen auf der Rückseite. Sehr große Rahmen haben schwere Aufhängeplatten und/oder eine Montageschiene. Wenn Sie Fragen haben, können Sie bitte Kontakt aufnehmen.

Meine Karten sind äußerst hochwertige Reproduktionen von Originalkarten.

Ich beziehe originale, seltene Karten aus Bibliotheken, Auktionshäusern und Privatsammlungen auf der ganzen Welt, restauriere sie in meiner Londoner Werkstatt und erstelle dann mit speziellen Giclée-Tinten und -Druckern wunderschöne Karten, die sogar noch besser aussehen als das Original.

Meine Karten werden auf säurefreiem, mattem Archivpapier (nicht glänzend) gedruckt, das sich sehr hochwertig anfühlt und fast wie Karton aussieht. Technisch gesehen beträgt das Papiergewicht/die Papierdicke 10mil/200g/m². Es eignet sich perfekt zum Einrahmen.

Ich drucke mit UV-lichtbeständigen Ultrachrome-Giclée-Pigmenttinten von Epson – einige der besten Tinten, die Sie finden können.

Wenn Sie „Gealtert“ auswählen, werde ich Ihre Karte von Hand altern lassen. Dazu verwende ich ein spezielles und einzigartiges Verfahren, das ich durch jahrelanges Studium alter Karten und Gespräche mit Forschern zum Verständnis der Chemie alternder Papiere entwickelt habe, und natürlich ... viel Übung!

Wenn Sie sich nicht sicher sind, bleiben Sie bei der Originalfarbe der Karte. Wenn Sie etwas Dunkleres und älter Wenn Sie auf der Suche sind, entscheiden Sie sich für „Aged“.
