WeiterlesenPublished with a 1992 imprint from 1985 mapping, the United States Geological Survey’s “San Antonio” presents a richly detailed 1:100,000 topographical portrait of south-central Texas at a moment of accelerating change. Centered on the expanding metropolitan presence of San Antonio and extending westward toward Castroville, the map captures the meeting of city, suburb, farmland, and Hill Country edge. Its contour lines reveal the subtle but important rise and fall of the terrain, while roads, waterways, reservoirs, and settlement patterns create a layered record of movement and land use. More than a navigational document, it is a precise snapshot of a region where historic communities and modern development were increasingly intertwined.
The USGS, long regarded as one of America’s most authoritative mapping institutions, brought to this sheet the clarity and discipline of its national topographic program. By the late twentieth century, these maps served engineers, planners, geologists, hydrologists, land managers, and travelers alike, combining scientific measurement with elegant cartographic order. The “San Antonio” sheet exemplifies that mission: highways and local roads are carefully ranked, hydrographic features are cleanly delineated, and elevations are rendered with the quiet authority of contour intervals. Its design balances utility and beauty, transforming the complexity of Texas terrain into an intelligible visual field. Every symbol contributes to a broader understanding of how people, water, and land shape one another.
Castroville, one of the map’s notable western communities, adds a distinctive historical dimension to the landscape. Founded in the nineteenth century by Alsatian settlers, the town retains a cultural identity unlike many others in Texas, and its placement near the Medina River reflects the enduring importance of water, fertile land, and transportation routes. On this map, Castroville appears within a wider network of rural roads, agricultural parcels, and neighboring settlements, suggesting both its historic rootedness and its relationship to the larger San Antonio region. The Medina River winds through the surrounding country as a geographical anchor, guiding patterns of habitation and cultivation. Its course gives the map a natural rhythm amid the geometry of roads and boundaries.
The topographic character shown here is especially compelling, revealing the transition between the urbanized San Antonio basin and the more rugged textures associated with the Texas Hill Country. Contour lines articulate slopes, ridges, drainage corridors, and lowland areas, making visible the physical framework beneath the region’s roads and communities. Lakes, reservoirs, streams, and recreational areas punctuate the sheet, underscoring the importance of water management in a climate marked by periodic drought and sudden floods. Highways thread across the terrain, linking suburban neighborhoods, rural farmland, and outlying towns. The result is a map that speaks simultaneously to natural process and human ambition, showing a landscape constantly negotiated between settlement, infrastructure, and geography.
Historically, the map is valuable as a record of the San Antonio area before several subsequent waves of metropolitan expansion. Since the mid-1980s, the region has seen substantial suburban growth, new transportation corridors, and shifting land use patterns, particularly along routes connecting central San Antonio with nearby communities. This sheet preserves an earlier configuration of that landscape, when rural margins and developing suburbs were still more visibly distinct. Parks and recreational lands, reservoirs, smaller highways, and community names together form a period portrait of place. For collectors, historians, and admirers of Texas cartography, the “San Antonio” map offers an evocative union of scientific precision and regional memory, charting a city and its hinterland at a pivotal moment.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
