WeiterlesenPaul Scheurich’s 1912 poster Karl Kremos Antipodenspiele – Extra, Matheus Müller Hoflieferant turns a beverage advertisement into a piece of theatrical spectacle. An enormous dark bottle rises above a formally dressed performer and an expectant crowd, its label bearing the emphatic word ‘Extra’. Bold orange lettering, creamy open ground and crisp black silhouettes give the design an immediate, almost stage-lit clarity, while the exaggerated difference in scale makes the bottle appear less like an everyday object than the star of the performance.
The poster belongs to an era in which advertising was becoming an increasingly assertive feature of urban visual culture. Concise typography, simplified drawing and strong blocks of colour had to communicate quickly in busy public settings. Scheurich, a German artist born in 1883 and known for decorative work with a distinctly theatrical elegance, was particularly well suited to this language. Here, the promotion of the Matheus Müller firm is linked to Karl Kremo’s Antipodenspiele—an acrobatic performance—so that entertainment and branding become inseparable. The product is not merely presented; it becomes part of the act.
A closer look
The composition is built around a steep vertical ascent. In the foreground, the performer’s animated pose directs attention upwards towards the bottle, which occupies much of the upper centre. Its black body is defined by a few carefully placed pale highlights, while the light label interrupts the silhouette and gives ‘Extra’ exceptional prominence. A subtle radiating effect above it heightens the sense of a climactic stage moment without disturbing the poster’s economical graphic structure.
Around the central figure, spectators form a compressed band of heads, hats and simplified expressions. Scheurich does not describe each member of the audience in equal detail; instead, the crowd works rhythmically, its repeated curves and dark accents suggesting attention and excitement. Glimpses of formal clothing and varied headwear root the scene in the social world of the early twentieth century. Near the lower edge, the suggestion of a table reinforces the festive setting, though it remains subordinate to the performer and bottle.
Typography frames the spectacle rather than sitting apart from it. ‘KARL KREMO’s ANTIPODENSPIELE’ runs across the top in forceful orange capitals, establishing both the performer and the attraction before the eye reaches the illustration. Below, the smaller inscription ‘MATHEUS MÜLLER Hoflieferant’ supplies the commercial identity. The hierarchy is deftly judged: orange lettering announces, the black bottle arrests attention, and the more restrained lower text completes the message. Against the warm cream background, this limited palette produces unusually strong visual cohesion.
Context and significance
Early twentieth-century poster designers often borrowed the compressed action and instantly legible gestures of the theatre, circus and music hall. Scheurich’s design takes that connection literally. The acrobatic subject provides movement, suspense and humour, while the gigantic bottle supplies a memorable commercial emblem. Rather than relying on extensive description, the poster communicates through scale, contrast and performance—a sophisticated example of advertising reduced to a few compelling visual cues.
Its enduring appeal lies in this fusion of elegance and exuberance. The formal dress, decorative lettering and controlled palette lend refinement, but the improbable bottle and animated crowd prevent the design from becoming sedate. Scheurich creates a scene poised between advertisement and playbill, preserving something of the noise, novelty and visual competition of public entertainment in 1912.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
