WeiterlesenPublished in 1965 from work compiled in 1944, the US Geological Survey’s “Hayward” presents a mid-century portrait of northwestern Wisconsin at a moment when its forests, lakes, roads, and settlements were being increasingly organized for modern access and recreation. Centered on Hayward and extending toward Cable and the surrounding lake country, the map captures a region defined by water and woodland: Namekagon Lake, Round Lake, Moose Lake, Big Fish Lake, the Chippewa River, and the Eau Claire River all structure the landscape. Its planimetric style emphasizes the practical geography of roads, railways, communities, lakes, streams, and forest cover, offering a clear, navigational view rather than a relief-focused topographic rendering.
The map was produced by the United States Geological Survey, the federal scientific agency whose cartographic work became a benchmark for precision, consistency, and public utility. By the mid-twentieth century, USGS mapping was central to planning, resource management, engineering, and outdoor travel across the United States. This Hayward sheet reflects that institutional clarity: features are presented with disciplined restraint, allowing roads, waterways, rail corridors, and settlement patterns to speak plainly. Though not a topographic map in the conventional sense, it still conveys the character of the terrain through the density of lakes, the branching of streams, and the distribution of forested land, suggesting a glacially shaped landscape of basins, wetlands, and wooded ridges.
Hayward itself appears as the principal community on the map, a town long associated with the Northwoods identity of Wisconsin. Known for fishing, hunting, timber history, and later tourism, Hayward serves as a gateway to the lakes and forests that surround it. The road network, including Highway 63 and County Highway M, reveals the corridors by which visitors, residents, and commerce moved through the region. Railways add another historical layer, recalling the era when timber extraction, settlement, and regional trade depended on rail access. In this sense, the map is both a practical guide and a record of how Hayward was connected to the wider economy and landscape of northern Wisconsin.
The surrounding natural geography is one of the map’s great strengths. Namekagon Lake, Round Lake, Moose Lake, and Big Fish Lake are not merely scenic details; they are the defining elements of the region’s human and ecological life. The Chippewa and Eau Claire rivers, together with numerous smaller streams, trace drainage patterns that have shaped travel, habitat, and settlement for generations. The presence of the Chequamegon National Forest and other forested areas, rendered in shades of green, underscores the importance of public land and woodland management. Even without contour lines, the map evokes a richly textured environment of lake chains, river courses, timberlands, and recreational waters.
As a historical document, “Hayward” preserves a view of the region before the full expansion of late twentieth-century recreational development. Since its publication, land use, conservation priorities, tourism infrastructure, and patterns of seasonal residence have all evolved, giving the map additional resonance as a snapshot of an earlier Northwoods landscape. Its planimetric format makes those changes especially legible: roads, settlements, railways, and forest boundaries are shown with an administrative directness that invites comparison with the present. For collectors, the appeal lies not only in the clean authority of USGS design, but in the way this map captures Hayward and its lake country at the intersection of wilderness, resource management, and leisure.

With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Published in 1965 from work compiled in 1944, the US Geological Survey’s “Hayward” presents a mid-century portrait of northwestern Wisconsin at a moment when its forests, lakes, roads, and settlements were being increasingly organized for modern access and recreation.
