buvez-mon-vin-vintage-wine-poster-by-dransy-1930
Buvez mon vin Vintage Wine Poster by Dransy, 1930

Dransy’s Buvez mon vin et vivez joyeux, dated 1930, turns a simple exhortation—“Drink my wine and live joyfully”—into a piece of exuberant visual theatre. At its centre, a broadly grinning man raises a ruby-filled glass while perched upon an animated blue donkey. His extravagant curls appear to be formed from bunches of grapes, making the pleasures of wine part of the character himself. Saturated reds, greens and blues leap from the pale ground, while emphatic lettering carries the message from the top of the poster to its lower edge.

The design belongs to a French tradition in which commercial posters had to communicate instantly amid the bustle of streets, cafés and shop windows. By 1930, poster artists could draw upon several decades of increasingly bold public advertising: simplified silhouettes, compressed space and memorable characters were used to make a message legible at a glance. Dransy approaches the task with comic invention rather than refinement. Wine is presented not through vineyards, châteaux or carefully arranged still life, but through a gleeful mascot whose exaggerated expression gives the slogan a human—or nearly human—voice.

A closer look

The composition is organised around a strong vertical sequence. “BUVEZ” curves across the upper portion like a command issued from above, before the eye drops to the raised glass and the figure’s delighted face. The words “MON VIN” occupy the central area, closely integrated with the illustration, while “ET VIVEZ JOYEUX” stretches across the lower section in forceful red lettering. Rather than sitting apart from the picture, the typography participates in its movement: the changing scale and placement of the words create a lively rhythm of instruction, product and promised result.

The central character rewards closer inspection. Large eyes, a wide mouth and abundant grape-like hair push his appearance towards caricature, while the contrast between his colourful clothing and the donkey’s cool blue body keeps the two forms distinct. Dark outlines give each shape immediate clarity, even where limbs, clothing and animal overlap. The donkey is no passive support; its alert features and animated posture extend the joke, lending the whole group the improbable momentum of a festive procession.

A bottle in the lower right bears the words “Mon vin”, quietly anchoring the poster’s comic fantasy to the advertised drink. This comparatively small detail is important to the visual balance: it answers the glass held aloft above and helps direct the gaze into the bottom corner. Purple and yellow grapes, the rich red of the wine and bright green accents enliven the principal figure, while the largely unoccupied background prevents these competing colours from becoming confused.

Context and significance

Commercial poster art depends upon economy: a viewer must grasp its subject before moving on. Here, Dransy achieves that economy without sacrificing eccentricity. Flat areas of intense colour, vigorous contour and a deliberately shallow sense of space keep the design readable, but its memorable power lies in the absurd particulars—the vinous hairstyle, the blue donkey and the ecstatic toast. The result is both advertisement and comic performance, preserving the cheerful directness of everyday French visual culture between the wars.

What remains especially engaging is the close fit between words and character. The poster does not merely print a promise of joy; it constructs a figure who seems already overwhelmed by it. Dransy’s jovial drinker, improbable mount and emphatic slogan combine to make conviviality itself the product on offer.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
