Continuer la lectureAugust Macke’s Kinder mit Ziege im Wald (1912)—“Children with a Goat in the Woods”—turns a modest woodland encounter into a dense orchestration of colour. Two children gather around a white goat amid trees and undergrowth: one bends towards the animal in a red jacket and broad orange hat, while a standing figure in deep blue forms a cool vertical accent. Around them, greens, browns and flashes of red break the forest into interlocking patches, so that figures, animal and foliage appear woven into the same animated surface.
Painted during Macke’s association with Der Blaue Reiter, the Munich-based group that became a defining force in German Expressionism, the work belongs to a period of rapid experimentation in European art. Macke shared the group’s interest in heightened colour and simplified form, yet his paintings often remained closely connected to ordinary life: gardens, promenades, shops and figures absorbed in quiet activity. Here, the children’s gentle attention to the goat provides an intimate human centre, while strict naturalism gives way to a more rhythmic construction of the surrounding landscape.
A closer look
The composition is held together by a series of strong verticals. At the upper left, a substantial brown tree trunk rises into a layered canopy, echoed by slimmer trunks and upright shapes further back. Against these darker woodland elements, the goat’s pale body becomes a conspicuous point of light. Its softly handled white coat stands apart from the more saturated clothing and vegetation without disrupting the harmony of the scene.
Colour directs the eye as decisively as outline. The kneeling child’s red jacket makes a concentrated warm note near the centre, intensified by the orange brim and yellow band of the hat. Beside it, the blue garment of the standing child supplies a cooler, weightier block. These colours are not confined by conventional modelling; instead, they participate in a broader patchwork of emerald, blue-green, ochre and earthy brown. Small red accents among the trees punctuate the foliage, reading as glints of light, flowers or fruit without becoming fully descriptive.
The woodland grows less literal towards the background. Leaves and branches dissolve into abbreviated marks and swirling areas of colour, creating depth through overlap and tonal contrast rather than exact botanical detail. Brighter passages suggest light filtering through the canopy, while deeper greens and blues establish pockets of shade. The result is a space that feels enclosed but not static: the eye moves between the children, the goat and the repeated rhythms of trunks and foliage.
Context and significance
Der Blaue Reiter brought together artists who regarded colour as an expressive force rather than merely a means of copying appearances. Macke’s contribution to that wider development was distinctive. Compared with the more spiritual abstraction pursued by some of his contemporaries, he frequently found his subjects in recognisable, everyday encounters, using modern colour and compressed form to renew familiar scenes. Kinder mit Ziege im Wald demonstrates that balance particularly clearly: its subject remains tender and legible, but its visual energy comes from the autonomous life of reds, blues and greens.
The painting’s appeal lies in this union of intimacy and formal boldness. A child’s gesture towards an animal supplies the quiet narrative, yet the forest is equally active—a shifting mosaic in which light, clothing, bark and leaves continually answer one another. Macke makes the woodland less a backdrop than a living structure around the figures, giving a fleeting episode the coherence and vitality of a carefully composed colour harmony.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
