Continuer la lectureElixir des Alpes (1900–1910), dated 1900 and created by the Belgian workshop Lithographie Artistique, turns a beverage advertisement into a piece of exuberant visual theatre. Against an uninterrupted yellow ground, a magnificently moustached drinker leans into the composition with bright blue eyes, a straw hat and an expression of barely contained enthusiasm. His expansive presence is countered by the bottle held at the right, while emphatic red and black lettering ensures that product, character and sales message register almost simultaneously.
The poster belongs to the flourishing culture of Belle Époque commercial lithography, when improvements in colour printing helped manufacturers address an expanding consumer public through vivid, memorable graphics. Rather than offering a restrained account of the drink, Lithographie Artistique gives it a persuasive personality: convivial, hearty and knowingly exaggerated. The inscriptions combine Dutch and French, reflecting the multilingual context of Belgian advertising, while the workshop credit at lower right identifies “La Lithographie Artistique, Tournai”.
A closer look
The figure dominates the upper left of the design. His face is built from energetic curves—the sweep of the eyebrows, rounded cheeks and especially the broad black moustache—set off by finely modelled shadows around the nose and chin. A lightly shaded straw hat crowns the performance, while the darker suit and collar create a strong silhouette against the luminous background. Small white flowers in his boutonnière supply an unexpectedly delicate note amid the poster’s robust colour and broad forms.
Movement gathers around the hand and bottle. The fingers curve firmly around a silver-toned container marked “Oude Jenever”, projecting it towards the spectator and introducing a slight sense of depth into an otherwise deliberately flat arrangement. Nearby, a small glass waits on the table, its pale highlights adding a moment of realism. These objects establish a concise narrative: the bottle has been presented, the glass is ready, and the drinker’s expression supplies the endorsement before a word has been read.
Typography provides the composition with its second voice. “De Beste Oude Jenever” runs prominently across the upper area, its red and black forms standing sharply against yellow; below, “Le Meilleur des Vieux Systèmes” anchors the design in heavy black lettering. The hierarchy is carefully controlled. Face, slogan and bottle each occupy a distinct zone, yet the diagonal passage from the character’s gaze to his extended hand draws them together. Red accents add urgency, while white and silver details prevent the restricted palette from becoming visually heavy.
Context and significance
Commercial posters of this period had to communicate quickly in streets, cafés and shop interiors. Here, the broad field of yellow functions as both atmosphere and graphic device, eliminating incidental background detail so that the figure and lettering remain legible at a glance. The exaggerated spokesman belongs to a form of advertising that relied on caricature and sociability: a recognisable human type could make a bottled product appear familiar, pleasurable and full of character.
At closer range, however, the poster is more nuanced than its immediate comic effect suggests. Fine lines articulate the face and clothing, textured shading lends volume to the hat and collar, and the carefully described label rewards inspection. That combination of forceful simplification and precise detail is central to its appeal: Elixir des Alpes is at once a direct sales image and a lively example of how turn-of-the-century lithographic design transformed everyday commerce into public spectacle.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
