Continuer la lectureLeonetto Cappiello’s Florio, created in 1911, turns a beverage advertisement into a compact burst of movement and colour. Three women dance across an uninterrupted field of deep blue, their bare feet lifted in mid-step and bottles held triumphantly above their heads. Dresses of yellow, scarlet and warm orange sweep around the figures, while the name “FLORIO” appears overhead in emphatic yellow capitals. The result is instantly legible yet far from static: product, lettering and performance are fused into a single exuberant motif.
Cappiello was among the most influential commercial artists of the early twentieth century, helping to establish a new language for posters intended to be understood rapidly in busy public spaces. Born in Italy in 1875, he became celebrated for simplifying advertisements around strong silhouettes, vivid colour and memorable central characters. Rather than filling the sheet with explanatory copy, he allowed a dominant figure or visual conceit to carry the message. Florio exemplifies that method. Its three dancers form a kind of animated emblem, their coordinated gestures linking the brand not to a detailed narrative but to festivity, sociability and immediate visual pleasure.
A closer look
The dancers occupy the central vertical axis, but their poses prevent the arrangement from becoming rigid. Raised arms create a repeated upward thrust, directing attention towards the bottles and then to the brand name above. Below, bent knees, pointed toes and fluttering hems introduce a second rhythm: the eye moves from one figure to the next as though following a sequence of steps. Although all three women participate in the same action, differences in hairstyle, colouring and posture give each a distinct presence.
Cappiello’s palette depends upon forceful contrasts. The cool, saturated blue ground is almost entirely free of scenery, allowing the warmer costumes to advance sharply from it. Yellow is especially important: it appears in both clothing and typography, visually binding the human spectacle to the commercial name. Red and orange provide denser accents through the centre of the composition, while pale passages in the skin and garments lend the figures just enough modelling to remain lively without weakening the poster’s flat graphic impact.
Small details reward closer attention without distracting from the overall design. Bottle labels are indicated within the dancers’ raised hands, and economical lines pick out facial features, folds and strands of hair. At the bottom, the large yellow letters “S.O.M.” act almost as a visual platform beneath the figures. Their block-like weight contrasts with the curved hems and angled limbs above, stabilising a composition that otherwise seems on the verge of dancing beyond its boundaries.
Context and significance
At the beginning of the twentieth century, the commercial poster had become a prominent element of modern urban visual culture. It needed to compete for attention at a distance, often amid crowded streets and other advertisements. Cappiello’s answer was clarity rather than accumulation: broad colour fields, emphatic contours and a central motif capable of lodging in the memory. This approach helped move poster design away from elaborate illustrative scenes towards the concise visual identities associated with modern advertising.
Florio is particularly effective because its simplification never feels austere. The blank blue field creates focus, but the dancers supply wit, character and theatrical energy. Even before the smaller details are noticed, the essential message has already been delivered through rhythm and contrast: a name, a bottle and an atmosphere of celebration, compressed into one of Cappiello’s characteristically assured graphic performances.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
