Continuer la lecturePierre-Joseph Redouté’s Ixia bulbocodium (1802–1816), dated 1802, presents the plant as both a living specimen and an object of close study. A large, deep pink flower rises at the centre on a slender stem, its yellow heart held above a fan of long green leaves. Smaller studies stand to either side: a purple bloom on the left and, on the right, a developing flower shown with its bulb. Set against a pale, uncluttered ground, the arrangement has the poised clarity of a carefully composed portrait.
Redouté was among the most celebrated flower painters of the early nineteenth century, admired for reconciling botanical precision with graceful design. His images belong to a period of expanding interest in natural history, when plant illustrations were valued not only as records for identification and study but also for their refinement as works of art. Here, scientific attention never becomes dry or diagrammatic. The different stages of growth form an elegant visual sequence, while subtle tonal transitions give the flowers a luminous, almost weightless presence.
A closer look
The central specimen establishes the composition’s scale and rhythm. Its narrow leaves spring upwards in overlapping blades, some almost vertical and others bending gently away from the stem. Fine pale lines suggest their veins and structure, while graduated greens distinguish one leaf from another. Above them, the open flower spreads into a broad cup. Its petals shift from rich rose-pink towards softer, cooler edges, with the small yellow centre providing the image’s sharpest point of warm colour.
To the left, the more compact purple flower offers a change of proportion and hue. Its petals are finely cupped rather than fully spread, allowing their delicately described edges to become especially noticeable. The smaller scale of this study prevents the plate from settling into rigid symmetry: it acts as a quiet counterweight to the dominant central bloom. At the lower left, a separate bulb and its threadlike roots reveal the less conspicuous structures beneath the plant’s flowering display.
The specimen on the right extends this botanical account. Its green stem and developing flower are accompanied by a visible bulb, linking blossom, foliage and root system within the same open field. Considerable negative space separates the three studies, making their differences easy to compare while preserving the composition’s airiness. At the bottom centre, the label “Ixia Bulbocodium” anchors the otherwise free-standing forms with the restraint of a scientific caption.
Context and significance
Botanical illustration of this period occupied a productive space between science and connoisseurship. A successful plate needed to communicate characteristic structures clearly, yet Redouté’s reputation rested equally on his ability to make that clarity visually compelling. The staggered heights, varied flowering states and balanced intervals in Ixia bulbocodium demonstrate how observation could be organised into a composition rather than presented as a mere inventory.
The result rewards two kinds of looking. From a distance, the pink and purple flowers punctuate the warm beige ground with measured colour; closer inspection reveals leaf veins, petal gradations, exposed roots and the transition from bulb to bloom. That movement between immediate elegance and patient scrutiny is central to Redouté’s enduring appeal, and particularly well expressed in this lucid study.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
