Continuer la lecturePublished in 1984 using survey data from 1980, the “Brunswick Quadrangle” captures a richly detailed portrait of mid-coast Maine at the precise 1:24,000 scale for which United States Geological Survey maps are prized. Centered on Brunswick, the map records a landscape shaped by river, road, coast, woodland, and town life. The Androscoggin River flows through the sheet as both a natural boundary and historical artery, while Maine State Route 1 and Route 24 trace the modern corridors of movement. With its disciplined contouring, carefully differentiated land cover, and crisp depiction of built and natural features, this map offers a compelling snapshot of Brunswick and its environs at a moment when older agricultural, collegiate, military, and industrial landscapes still stood in close relation.
The United States Geological Survey brought to this map its long-established tradition of scientific cartography, combining field survey, aerial interpretation, and standardized symbology into a remarkably legible image of the land. Contour lines reveal the subtle elevation changes of coastal Maine: not dramatic mountains, but rolling ground, river terraces, wooded uplands, and low-lying areas approaching Merrymeeting Bay. Watercourses, wetlands, roads, rail lines, cemeteries, farms, and institutional grounds are rendered with the calm authority characteristic of late twentieth-century USGS mapping. The result is not merely a navigational document, but a systematic record of terrain and settlement, showing how Brunswick’s civic center, surrounding villages, agricultural tracts, and transportation routes fit within a broader geographic framework.
Brunswick itself appears as the cultural and geographic heart of the quadrangle, anchored by Main Street and the historic presence of Bowdoin College. The map situates the college within a town whose identity has long blended education, commerce, river access, and regional travel. Nearby features such as Crystal Spring Farm, Reed Farm, St. John’s Cemetery, and Foreside Road evoke older patterns of landholding, burial grounds, rural lanes, and coastal approach roads. Cooks Corner marks a developing commercial node, while Thomas Point Beach suggests the recreational relationship between the community and the tidal waters to the south. Together, these details create a layered image of Brunswick as both an old Maine town and an evolving modern center.
The Androscoggin River is among the most commanding features shown, sweeping past Brunswick and toward the complex waters of Merrymeeting Bay, where river systems, tidal influence, and marshland converge. Pejepscot Dam points to the region’s long history of harnessing waterpower, an important theme in Maine’s industrial and settlement geography. Bowdoinham and Harpswell appear within the wider spatial network, connecting inland riverine communities with peninsulas, shore roads, and coastal settlements. The map’s treatment of wooded areas and water bodies gives the viewer an immediate sense of the region’s texture: forested parcels, open land, tidal margins, and human corridors interlaced across a landscape defined by both utility and beauty.
One of the map’s most historically resonant elements is Naval Air Station Brunswick, a major twentieth-century presence whose later transformation into Brunswick Landing gives the sheet added documentary value. In 1980, the air station was still an active feature of the local landscape, set beside roads, neighborhoods, and commercial districts that would continue to change in the decades following publication. For collectors, historians, and admirers of Maine geography, the “Brunswick Quadrangle” preserves a measured, authoritative view of a community in transition. It records the relationships between college town, military installation, river power, rural remnants, and coastal access with the understated precision that makes USGS topographic maps enduringly fascinating.

Looking for a particular place? Review the detailed images to confirm that the town, landmark or feature you have in mind appears on the map. If you are unsure, ask our workshop to check before you order.
Detailed maps are especially rewarding at larger sizes, where names, boundaries and decorative features have more room to be appreciated. Use the close-up preview and size guide to choose the right scale for your wall.
This map looks amazing at sizes all the way up to 50in (125cm). If you are looking for a larger map, please get in touch.
The model in the listing images is holding the 16x20in (40x50cm) version of this map.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, mark one meaningful place, or request one considered visual detail. See personalised map examples.
Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
