maurin-quina-vintage-aperitif-poster-by-leonetto-cappiello-1906
Maurin Quina Vintage Aperitif Poster by Leonetto Cappiello, 1906

Leonetto Cappiello’s Maurin Quina, created in 1906 for the French aperitif, turns an advertisement into a piece of brilliantly compressed visual theatre. Against an almost uninterrupted black ground, a vivid green, demon-like figure leans across the composition, gripping the bottle with theatrical intensity. Its muscular limbs, pointed features, impish grin and flicking tail form an instantly recognisable silhouette, while the brand name blazes beneath in emphatic orange capitals. Colour, character and lettering work together with striking economy.

Cappiello was an Italian-born graphic artist who helped reshape commercial poster design in the early twentieth century. Rather than filling the page with detailed scenes or lengthy claims, he favoured a single memorable figure set against a plain field: an image legible in seconds on a busy street. Maurin Quina exemplifies this approach. Produced amid the competitive advertising culture of the Belle Époque, it belongs to a period when posters were both instruments of commerce and a conspicuous form of public art, transforming walls and kiosks into open-air galleries of colour and invention.

A closer look

The figure dominates the upper portion of the poster, its bright green body appearing almost luminous against the deep black. Cappiello avoids a stable, upright pose: the character tilts to one side, creating a strong diagonal that gives the design its restless energy. Curled hair softens the angular face, while the arched limbs and upward-flicking tail extend the sense of movement. The expression is mischievous rather than menacing, lending the advertisement the air of a comic stage performance.

At the centre of this physical display is the bottle itself. Held firmly across the figure’s body, it is treated with greater descriptive specificity than the surrounding forms. Highlights suggest the reflective surface of glass, and the small label identifies the product within the larger fantasy. This contrast is central to the poster’s logic: the extravagant green character catches the eye, but its gesture directs attention back to the aperitif.

The lower section provides a powerful graphic anchor. “MAURIN QUINA” is set in broad, uppercase orange lettering, its warm colour pressing forward against the black as forcefully as the green figure above. Smaller words beneath—“LE PUY” on the left and “FRANCE” on the right—situate the brand geographically without competing with its name. The artist’s signature at the lower right is unobtrusive but significant, marking the poster as the work of an individual designer as well as a commercial commission.

Context and significance

Cappiello’s great strength lay in understanding the conditions under which posters were encountered. His simplified compositions did not ask passers-by to study a crowded narrative; instead, they paired a product with an unforgettable visual emblem. Here, the green creature performs that role with unusual directness. Even before the lettering is read, the sharp opposition of green, orange and black establishes a distinctive identity that could be recognised from a distance.

The design also demonstrates how closely early modern advertising could approach caricature and popular spectacle. Anatomy is exaggerated, space is flattened and natural colour is abandoned in favour of immediate impact. Yet the result is controlled rather than chaotic: the tilted body supplies movement, the bottle establishes the commercial focus, and the heavy lettering stabilises the entire composition. More than a century later, Maurin Quina remains compelling because its humour and visual clarity are inseparable—the advertisement communicates through a character one is unlikely to forget.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
