samson-kina-vintage-advertising-poster-by-j-l-goffart-1914
Samson Kina Vintage Advertising Poster by J.L. Goffart, 1914

J. L. Goffart’s Samson Kina (1914–1930), dated 1914, builds its appeal around an improbable meeting of scale: an enormous bottle rises from the foreground while a broadly smiling man, wearing a patterned traditional hat, clasps it as though greeting a familiar companion. Behind them stretches an open blue sea, edged by distant mountains and a pale, lightly clouded sky. Warm reds and bottle-browns stand sharply against the cool maritime setting, giving the advertisement an immediate, emphatic clarity.

Created at the opening of the First World War, the poster belongs to an early twentieth-century commercial culture in which memorable characters, abbreviated landscapes and conspicuous brand names could carry a message at a glance. Goffart was a Belgian cartographer active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when printed graphics were increasingly shaped by modern surveying, administration and advances in reproduction. Here, however, graphic precision serves beverage advertising: spatial recession, colour contrast and bold visual hierarchy are directed towards making Samson Kina unmistakable.

A closer look

The bottle commands the lower centre of the composition. Its deep brown body is modelled with fine white highlights that describe the curve of the glass, while the lighter label interrupts the dark silhouette and brings the name “Samson Kina” into focus. A small red seal supplies a concentrated accent of colour. These details lend the bottle a degree of specificity, yet its exaggerated size takes it beyond straightforward product representation: it becomes the poster’s principal landmark.

At the upper right, the man’s face appears beside the bottle’s shoulder. His expression is direct and genial, creating a human point of contact within an otherwise highly simplified design. The checked or patterned band of his hat adds a lively patch of texture, contrasting with the broad, relatively flat fields of blue in the surrounding sea and sky. His embracing gesture also binds figure and bottle into a compact, instantly legible advertising emblem.

The background works more quietly. Gentle horizontal ripples lead the eye across the water towards a softened mountain range, while small ships at the upper left introduce a distant note of movement and travel. Atmospheric blues become paler towards the horizon, allowing the scenery to recede behind the crisp foreground forms. A narrow cream border contains the saturated colour and reinforces the poster’s vertical structure.

Context and significance

Although Goffart’s professional context was cartographic, this design reveals the shared visual discipline of maps, posters and other public-facing printed matter: each depends upon hierarchy, contrast and rapid comprehension. The foreground establishes the subject immediately; the brand lettering confirms it; and the scenic setting provides an expansive identity without competing for attention. Such economy was central to effective poster design, particularly when an advertisement needed to register from a distance.

The result is both promotional and theatrical. Samson Kina is not merely placed within a landscape but enlarged until it seems to inhabit that landscape, accompanied by a figure whose warmth and humour soften the force of the sales message. The contrast between monumental foreground and serene blue distance remains the design’s most distinctive feature, giving this beverage poster a character at once bold, playful and unusually scenic.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
