Continuer la lectureGénièvre Vieux Hasselt, created by an anonymous artist in 1906, turns an advertisement for Belgian genever into a genial drinking scene. Two elderly figures raise small glasses between prominently displayed bottles, their animated expressions set against a field of vivid orange. Broad areas of colour, crisp outlines and emphatic lettering make the design immediately legible, while its warmth comes from the conversational exchange at its centre: the product is presented not as an isolated commodity, but as part of a familiar social ritual.
The title refers to “old Hasselt” genever, the juniper-flavoured spirit closely associated with the Belgian city of Hasselt. By the beginning of the twentieth century, commercial artists increasingly used character, colour and bold typography to give goods a recognisable public identity. This design belongs to that expanding visual culture of advertising, in which practical information and decorative illustration were made to work together. Although its artist is unrecorded, the poster reveals a sure understanding of how personality could become a form of branding.
A closer look
The composition is arranged as a lively asymmetrical tableau. At the centre, a smiling older woman turns towards her companion, holding a slender, transparent glass with an air of easy familiarity. Her pale clothing is enlivened by a yellow scarf patterned with small floral motifs. Beside her, the jovial man wears a deep green coat, punctuated by a red rose at the lapel. The flower is a minor detail, but its shading and saturated colour give him the carefully dressed, celebratory character of a popular theatrical type.
The pair are flanked by two bottles, enlarged sufficiently to remain unmistakable even amid the human comedy. On the left, a green bottle carries a decorative label bearing the words “Genièvre Vieux”; on the right, a brown bottle provides a darker visual counterweight. Their upright forms act almost like stage wings, enclosing the conversation and directing attention towards the raised glasses. Bright highlights across the faces and clothing stand sharply against restrained shadows, preserving the flat, direct impact required of commercial graphic art.
Typography completes the structure. “Génièvre vieux Hasselt” stretches across the upper portion in large white serif letters, strongly contrasted with the orange ground. Below, “Jos. Notermans Hasselt” forms a substantial base to the design, its scale ensuring that the name remains as memorable as the illustrated scene. Fine decorative lines around the edges create a framing effect, gathering the bottles, figures and inscriptions into a compact visual emblem. Orange, brown and white dominate, with green, yellow, blue and red appearing as carefully placed accents rather than competing fields of colour.
Context and significance
Genever occupies a distinct place in the drinking culture of Belgium and the Netherlands, and Hasselt has long been identified with its production. The poster draws upon that association with tradition while speaking in the modern language of early twentieth-century commerce. Its sociable older drinkers lend the brand an air of established custom: age here is not treated solemnly, but expressed through conviviality, good dress and shared enjoyment.
What makes the design especially engaging is the balance it maintains between information and anecdote. The large bottles and lettering deliver the commercial message instantly, yet the exchanged glance, delicate glasses, patterned scarf and lapel flower reward closer attention. The result is both advertisement and miniature character scene—a compact example of how period graphic design could transform a regional beverage into a personable and memorable identity.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
