vintage-bavarian-bock-beer-poster-by-henry-jerome-schile-1887
Vintage Bavarian Bock Beer Poster by Henry Jerome Schile, 1887

Henry Jerome Schile’s Bavarian bock of 1887 turns beer advertising into a crowded pastoral comedy. At the centre, a woman in Bavarian dress grasps a goat by the horns, while a smartly dressed man raises a beer stein and gestures towards her from the lower right. Their animated encounter is staged against pine trees, distant mountains and a procession of smaller incidents, all articulated through crisp contours and vigorous areas of green, orange, brown and yellow.

Schile was an American artist working within the lively commercial print culture of the late nineteenth century, when chromolithographic imagery brought saturated colour and elaborate illustration to an expanding consumer public. Here, Bavarian identity is presented through costume, alpine scenery, brewing paraphernalia and genial caricature. The prominence of the goat adds a particularly apt visual joke: Bock is also the German word for a male goat, and the animal became a familiar emblem in the visual culture surrounding bock beer.

A closer look

The foreground is deliberately theatrical. The woman’s pale blouse, with its delicate lace edging, stands out against deeper greens and earthen browns, while stronger orange and yellow accents sharpen the folds and trimmings of her costume. Beside her, the goat is no mere incidental animal: its textured coat, alert head and emphatically handled horns make it an active participant in the scene. The suited drinker provides a contrasting social type, his formal clothing and raised stein lending the encounter the character of an anecdote caught at its most animated moment.

Beyond this central group, the landscape unfolds in successive layers. Pines and shrubs form a dark middle ground before the view opens towards blue-grey mountains and a softly clouded sky. In the upper right, a horse-drawn cart laden with barrels carries the brewing theme into the distance; elsewhere, a small figure with an umbrella and a dog introduces another note of playful activity. These diminutive episodes reward close attention without distracting from the principal trio.

Schile balances this abundance through changes of scale and carefully placed open ground. Small flowers brighten the lower edges, while the distant road and mountain slopes prevent the figures from feeling confined. Warm clothing and golden beer tones sit against cooler foliage and sky, producing both clarity and bustle. The design combines broad, legible shapes with fine descriptive passages—the goat’s fur, patterned fabric, lace trim and shaded barrels—so that it could communicate quickly as advertising while still sustaining prolonged looking.

Context and significance

Bavarian bock belongs to a period in which commercial imagery increasingly borrowed the resources of narrative painting and popular illustration. Rather than presenting beer as an isolated commodity, Schile constructs an entire imaginative world around it: regional dress, convivial behaviour, an alpine setting and the practical signs of brewing and distribution. Bavaria functions here not simply as a location but as a compact visual identity, one that nineteenth-century audiences could associate with established brewing traditions and European character.

The result is both advertisement and genre scene. Its message depends less upon restrained typography than upon spectacle, humour and recognisable motifs, with the goat supplying the memorable link between name and subject. Schile’s poster remains especially engaging for the way it compresses landscape, costume, animal study and social comedy into a single exuberant composition—an unusually rich example of how late nineteenth-century commercial art could inform and amuse at the same time.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
