vintage-bock-beer-poster-1885
Vintage Bock Beer Poster, 1885

Bock Beer, created by Wittemann Bros. in 1885, turns a familiar drink into a compact piece of visual theatre. A dark, sharp-eyed goat emerges at the upper left, its curling horns and pointed beard set against a luminous cream-and-yellow roundel. Opposite, a glass mug brims with golden beer and exuberant white froth. Hops, leaves and grain-like stalks bind the two together, while a broad red circular border gives the vertically arranged design the force of an emblem.

The goat is more than an amusing mascot. Bock is a strong beer associated with the German brewing tradition, and the German word Bock also means a male goat. Nineteenth-century advertisers repeatedly exploited this linguistic connection, turning the animal into an instantly recognisable sign for the drink. Here the lettering reads “BUCK BEER”, extending the pun for an English-speaking audience. Wittemann Bros., an American firm working when colour lithography was transforming commercial art, belonged to a flourishing print culture in which breweries used increasingly elaborate imagery to distinguish their products and attract urban consumers.

A closer look

The design balances two unequal forms with remarkable economy. The goat’s head occupies the upper-left quadrant, angled slightly towards the beer as though inspecting it. Subtle shading around the eyes, muzzle and beard gives the animal an alert, almost theatrical expression, while its dark brown coat stands crisply against the pale central field. The horns follow the curve of the surrounding frame, helping to lock the figure into the circular composition rather than allowing it to read as a separate natural-history study.

At lower right, the beer mug supplies the brightest passage. Golden yellow liquid is capped by dense white foam, which rises above the rim in irregular lobes; the mug rests on a small plate, a touch of everyday specificity amid the poster’s decorative abundance. Green hops and veined leaves curl around the principal subjects, their cooler tones interrupting the prevailing browns, oranges and reds. Above, slender stalks introduce a further agricultural note, connecting the finished drink with the ingredients and cultivation behind it.

The typography forms a third visual presence. “BUCK BEER” is set in large, ornate letters across the lower centre, with curling terminals that echo the surrounding foliage and the goat’s horns. Rather than sitting beneath the illustration as a plain caption, the words participate in its ornamental rhythm. Strong outlines and clearly separated areas of colour keep every element legible, while the cream-to-yellow shading inside the roundel adds just enough depth to distinguish the central motif from the flatter outer field.

Context and significance

By the 1880s, commercial advertising was becoming an increasingly vivid part of American urban life. Advances in colour printing allowed trade imagery to move beyond straightforward labels and notices towards richly styled compositions that could entertain as well as inform. Breweries were especially well suited to this treatment: frothing glasses, botanical ingredients and memorable mascots could communicate flavour, abundance and identity before a viewer had read a line of copy.

Bock Beer captures that meeting of salesmanship and popular illustration. Its direct message is unmistakable, yet the pleasure lies in the inventive details—the goat’s vivid gaze, the foam breaking above the glass, and the way horns, lettering and foliage repeat one another’s curves. The result is both advertisement and visual joke, rooted in the lively graphic culture of the late nineteenth century.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
