Julius Klinger’s Arndt’s alkoholfreies Bier, created in 1906, turns an unfamiliar proposition—non-alcoholic beer—into a piece of brisk visual theatre. A green bottle occupies the centre of a vivid red field, encircled by four men in black top hats who peer towards it with exaggerated curiosity. Their dark profiles frame the product like an impromptu committee of inspection, while the bottle’s bright colour and pale highlights make it appear almost illuminated against the emphatic background.

An Austrian designer celebrated for economical forms, sharp colour contrasts and assured typography, Klinger belonged to a period in which the modern advertising poster was becoming a distinctive art in its own right. Images designed for the street had to communicate immediately amid the distractions of urban life. Here, rather than surrounding the drink with naturalistic detail, Klinger reduces the message to a few memorable components: bottle, brand name, astonished spectators and a witty claim. The subject also reflects an expanding early twentieth-century beverage market, in which a non-alcoholic beer could be presented as both a novelty and the solution to a long-standing problem.

A closer look

The composition is tightly organised around the upright bottle. Its narrow green silhouette provides a strong vertical axis, but the arrangement around it is deliberately less orderly. Heads and hats press in from the edges, creating a crowded, almost conspiratorial circle. Some faces are seen largely in profile, their cartoon-like noses, chins and expressions sharpened against the red ground. The close cropping makes the men seem to lean into the scene from beyond the poster, directing every gaze—and consequently the viewer’s attention—towards the beer.

Colour performs much of the persuasive work. The near-black figures establish a dense outer frame, the scarlet-red background supplies urgency, and the saturated green bottle becomes the single chromatic counterweight. Although most of the design relies on flat, solid areas, lighter marks on the glass give the bottle a suggestion of volume. The label is comparatively intricate, rewarding closer attention with smaller lettering and decorative detail after the larger forms have delivered their immediate impact.

Typography controls the order in which the advertisement is read. “Arndt’s” appears prominently in large white lettering above the bottle, while “alkoholfreies Bier” identifies the product with equal clarity. Below, the smaller slogan declares, “After a thousand-year attempt, the riddle is finally solved!” The grandiose phrasing is knowingly playful: the beverage is introduced not simply as another commercial product, but as the triumphant answer to an age-old puzzle. Changes of scale allow the brand to be grasped first and the joke discovered afterwards.

Context and significance

Klinger’s design exemplifies a decisive shift away from crowded nineteenth-century advertising towards a more concentrated graphic language. Simplified silhouettes, restricted colour and oversized lettering could be understood rapidly and remembered easily. Yet economy does not mean severity here. The four top-hatted observers give the poster narrative, social comedy and movement; their collective fascination effectively demonstrates the response the advertisement hopes to provoke.

The result is both direct and mischievous. Klinger makes the bottle unmistakable, but it is the surrounding cast—their hats, compressed faces and shared air of discovery—that gives Arndt’s alkoholfreies Bier its lasting personality. It remains an incisive example of how early modern commercial art could turn a straightforward product announcement into a compact visual joke.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
