Châtel is shown here as a broad Alpine panorama, with the resort’s ski terrain spread across a luminous sweep of snowfields, wooded slopes and high rocky ridges. Rather than a flat plan, the map presents the area in an oblique view that gives the mountains real presence: the bold CHÂTEL title sits beneath a dramatic wall of snow and exposed dark rock, while the subtitle Portes du Soleil places the resort within its wider setting. It is a map with both atmosphere and purpose, combining a striking mountain scene with an impressively detailed ski overlay.

The geography unfolds in distinct sectors that remain easy to follow across the wider landscape. Châtel itself lies at the centre of the composition, with familiar names such as Super Châtel, Petit Châtel, Barbossine, Linga, Plaine Dranse and Pré-la-Joux stepping outward across the slopes. Beyond them, the map reaches towards Avoriaz in the east, while Morgins and Torgon appear across the upper and left-hand ridges, marked with Swiss flags that quietly emphasise the cross-border character of the ski area. Lower down, La Chapelle d’Abondance and Crêt Béni extend the scene into another valley, so the whole image reads as a linked mountain world rather than a single compact bowl.

What makes the map especially engaging is the contrast between the calm, pale terrain painting and the lively network of pistes and lifts laid over it. Snow is rendered in cool whites and blue-greys, forests in muted green-grey, and the higher skyline in sharper, darker rock forms. Against that subdued base, the coloured piste lines and bold black lift routes stand out crisply, threading between named peaks such as Pointe de Bellevue, Tête du Linga, Tête du Géant, Cornebois and Pointe de Chésery. The purple dashed boundary helps gather the various sectors into one coherent ski domain, while the magenta-framed inset for Super Châtel adds a practical and visually distinctive detail, drawing attention to one of the resort’s busiest areas.

There is plenty here for someone who knows Châtel well. A regular visitor will recognise the progression from village level to the higher ridgelines, the route out towards Plaine Dranse and Pré-la-Joux, and the way neighbouring sectors sit in relation to one another. Equally, for someone planning a future trip, the map offers that satisfying sense of discovery that ski panoramas do so well: village names, lift corridors, peaks and viewpoints gradually reveal the shape of the resort as the eye moves across the image. As wall art, it has the appeal of both a memory and an invitation.

The art of the ski map

The character of this piece lies in its balance between scenic illustration and clear ski mapping. The mountain backdrop is expansive and atmospheric, with snowy relief and jagged summits giving the resort a true Alpine setting, while the oblique perspective makes the descents and ridgelines feel immediate and legible.

Closer inspection rewards the eye with layers of cartographic detail: coloured pistes crossing wooded and open slopes, black lift lines punctuated by station markers, small facility symbols, and the neat bilingual legend tucked into the lower right. The Super Châtel inset is particularly effective, adding a compact close-up without disturbing the larger panorama.

A sense of place at home

This map would sit especially well in a chalet sitting room, a study or a hallway where its broad snowy palette and intricate detail can be appreciated at leisure. Its cool tones and expansive composition give it a calm visual presence, while the recognisable place names make it deeply personal for anyone with a connection to Châtel.

A thoughtful gift for skiers

This would make a particularly thoughtful gift for someone who returns to Châtel year after year, has family memories in the valley, or wants to mark a favourite French Alpine resort with something more evocative than a simple trail plan. It suits skiers who enjoy recognising the shape of a place as much as remembering the days spent exploring it.

Perfect for:

  • A birthday gift for a devoted Châtel skier
  • A keepsake of a family holiday in the Portes du Soleil
  • A chalet owner with ties to Châtel or La Chapelle d’Abondance
  • A Christmas present for someone planning a return trip
  • An anniversary gift recalling shared ski holidays in the Alps

For anyone who knows Châtel, this map captures the resort not only as a ski area, but as a landscape of ridges, villages and remembered routes.

Looking for a different resort? You can order a custom map of almost any ski area in the world, with the coverage, colours and layout tailored to your preferences.

This ski area map can also be personalised. We can discreetly mark your chalet, highlight a favourite piste, add a small illustration of you and your family skiing, or include a date and dedication to remember a special trip. Each addition is carefully composed to complement the original map, preserving its character and keeping the mountain detail clear.

Customisation, sizing and framing

For guidance on size, colour or framing, or to discuss an option that is not available online, please contact us. Our team will be happy to advise, and we usually respond within a few minutes.

A familiar resort can hold years of memories: the slope where someone first learned to ski, a much-loved mountain restaurant, or the chalet you return to every winter. Explore examples of our personalised maps for ideas on how to bring those memories into your design.

For a more nostalgic finish, you can choose our optional ageing treatment. Softer tones and a gently weathered appearance give the map the character of a vintage alpine print, particularly suited to a chalet, study or reading room. Browse examples of our ageing treatments to see the different effects.

The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this map.

For a larger statement piece, printing and framing at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft) may be available, depending on the original map. For a bespoke size or framing option that is not shown online, please get in touch. We will help you choose a format that makes the most of the map's detail.

The map is available as a giclée print on acid-free archival matte paper, or professionally framed and ready to hang. Our standard frames are offered in six carefully selected finishes: black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white. A wider range of mouldings, mounts and finishes is available through our custom framing service.

Our frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic, chosen for its clarity and light weight. The finish keeps the focus on the map, from the sweep of the mountain range to the finer piste lines and place names.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Parla di questo pezzo con il nostro team Trade & Projects

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
