The largest flower occupies the upper-right portion of the plate, its densely layered petals opening around tiny yellow stamens. A slender pinkish stem carries the eye downwards through the composition, while the surrounding expanse of warm beige gives every contour unusual clarity.
The plate belongs to the refined culture of early nineteenth-century botanical publishing, in which close observation and decorative grace were complementary rather than competing aims. Redouté helped establish the visual language of the great flower book: plants were isolated from their habitats, arranged against spacious pale grounds and rendered with enough precision to reward botanical interest, yet with a compositional elegance intended equally for collectors and gardeners. In Choix des plus belles fleurs, the very idea of a “choice of the most beautiful flowers” makes this union of natural history and connoisseurship explicit.
A closer look
The composition is built around an asymmetry that feels carefully judged. The principal bloom rises towards the upper right, balanced by a smaller, tightly furled bud at the upper left. Rather than presenting a uniform floral cluster, Redouté sets different stages of growth beside one another: the closed bud, the unfolding forms around it and the fully opened double flower. Their slight overlaps create depth without disturbing the plate’s lucid, specimen-like presentation.
Within the main blossom, the colour shifts from saturated red in the folded recesses to softer, pinker highlights along the curling edges. Fine lines follow the direction of each petal, describing both its structure and its velvety softness. The minute yellow details at the centre form a sharp, warm accent amid the reds. Evenly distributed light avoids theatrical shadow; modelling is achieved instead through restrained gradations that make the petals appear to turn and gather.
The foliage provides a quieter counterpoint. Three prominent leaves in the lower-right section are articulated by delicate veins and gently shaded margins, while additional leaves spread towards the lower left to steady the descending stem. Their dark and light greens stand crisply against the neutral ground, but never rival the flower’s concentration of colour. Beneath the botanical arrangement, the centred inscription “Dalea double” identifies the subject, while “Langlois.” appears discreetly at the lower right.

Redouté’s reputation rests on precisely this ability to reconcile taxonomic attention with an exceptionally polished sense of design. His flowers are not treated as inert diagrams: stems bend, petals overlap and leaves turn just enough to communicate the living structure of the plant. We print and frame maps and artwork in 23 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
