Continua a leggerePierre-Joseph Redouté’s Choix des plus belles fleurs, plate 083, published in 1827, presents the common or European plum, Prunus domestica, as an object of both botanical scrutiny and visual pleasure. Three ripe fruits hang at the centre of a slender branch, their deep purple skins modelled with soft highlights and subtle passages of yellow near the base. Around them, broad green leaves spread in different directions, giving the composition a lively, almost sculptural balance against the pale ground.
Redouté was among the most celebrated botanical illustrators of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. His reputation rested on an ability to reconcile scientific clarity with an unusually refined sense of arrangement: specimens remain legible and informative, yet never appear stiffly diagrammatic. This plate comes from Choix des plus belles fleurs—a title meaning “Selection of the Most Beautiful Flowers”—produced at a time when lavish botanical books were sought after by botanists, collectors and aristocratic patrons. Although fruit rather than blossom commands the page, the plum is treated with the same delicacy and attentiveness that Redouté brought to his better-known floral subjects.
A closer look
The three plums form the visual centre of gravity. Rather than repeating an identical shape, Redouté varies their position and tonal character: one fruit turns towards the light, while another recedes beneath a leaf into deeper violet shadow. Small shifts from purple to muted yellow-green suggest ripeness and the bloom of the skin, while a slight blemish prevents the fruit from becoming idealised beyond recognition. Soft, even illumination gives each plum convincing weight without sacrificing the clean clarity expected of a botanical plate.
The foliage provides a more angular counterpoint to these rounded forms. Leaves open towards the upper left and right, their serrated edges and branching veins recorded in fine, controlled lines. Their greens range from cool, shadowed tones to lighter yellow-green passages where the surfaces seem to catch the light. Individual leaves overlap the fruit and one another, establishing depth while still allowing the plant’s structure to be followed from stem to tip. Minor irregularities along the edges and differences in orientation convey the natural variability of a living specimen.
Much of the plate’s effectiveness depends upon what has been left unoccupied. The warm cream background isolates every contour, making the thin brown branch, leaf stems and fine veins easy to distinguish. The vertical arrangement rises lightly through this open space rather than filling it, while the inscription “Prunus Domestica” at the lower right provides a restrained botanical identification without disturbing the composition.
Context and significance
Botanical illustration in Redouté’s period occupied a fertile ground between science, horticulture and decorative art. An image needed to preserve identifying features, but publications of this kind also addressed an audience that valued grace, colour and rarity. Redouté’s particular achievement was to make those aims appear inseparable. Here, the leaf venation, growth pattern and attachment of the fruit are clearly articulated, yet the branch is also arranged with the poise of a carefully considered still life.
The result is characteristic of Redouté’s refined naturalism: precise without dryness, elegant without losing contact with the imperfections of the specimen. The saturated purple fruit, varied foliage and spacious ground give this plum study a quiet distinction, rewarding both an interest in botanical history and close attention to the ordinary forms of cultivated plants.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
