The plant occupies the page without crowding it: generous off-white space isolates each leaf, bud and flower, turning a living specimen into a composition of measured upward movement.
Redouté helped define European botanical art in the early nineteenth century, when close scientific observation and decorative refinement were understood as complementary rather than opposing aims. Celebrated for his flower studies, the French artist worked for distinguished patrons including Marie Antoinette and Empress Joséphine, whose celebrated garden at Malmaison encouraged serious interest in rare and cultivated plants. His rose illustrations belong to the period in which botanical publications served several audiences at once—as records of plant structure, aids to identification and objects of considerable visual sophistication.
A closer look
The fully opened flower at the upper centre provides the composition’s brightest passage. Its white petals are not treated as flat, blank shapes: faint tonal variations, stippled textures and delicate shadows distinguish one overlapping layer from another. The petals curl subtly around the warm yellow centre, while the darker surrounding leaves sharpen the flower’s pale silhouette. This contrast gives the blossom prominence without resorting to dramatic colour.
Below and to the left, the foliage becomes denser. Individual leaves shift between fresh, clear green and deeper olive tones, with fine veins describing their structure and gentle changes of shading suggesting glossy surfaces. Their serrated edges and alternating angles prevent the stem from appearing rigidly diagrammatic. Leaves overlap, recede and turn, creating a persuasive sense of depth while retaining the legibility expected of botanical illustration.
Smaller details enrich the study’s account of the plant’s growth. An unopened bud introduces an earlier stage of flowering, its compact form set against the expansive bloom above. Along the lower stem, carefully observed thorns interrupt the otherwise elegant vertical line. Beneath the botanical study, the scripted title Rosa Sempervirens Leschenaultiana gives the specimen a formal taxonomic identity; Redouté’s name appears more discreetly in the lower margin.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
