Two pink blooms dominate the central stem, their petals deepening towards crimson folds and opening around finely drawn yellow stamens. Against the pale, almost empty ground, the branching silhouette feels at once botanically descriptive and carefully orchestrated: foliage spreads towards the upper left, while a succession of buds carries the eye along the right-hand edge.
Redouté was among the defining botanical illustrators of the early nineteenth century. Born in 1759 and active in France, he developed a manner in which exact observation and decorative refinement were unusually well balanced. Plates such as this were created within a flourishing culture of flower books valued by natural historians, gardeners and collectors. The hibiscus is therefore more than an isolated specimen: it belongs to a tradition that sought to make botanical knowledge visually lucid while preserving the colour, delicacy and individual character of living plants.
A closer look
The two principal flowers are related without being repetitive. One opens broadly towards the viewer, revealing a pale yellow centre touched with cooler blue-grey notes; the other turns at an angle, its overlapping petals forming a deeper pocket of shadow. Subtle gradations move from clear pink to richer red, giving the corollas weight and curvature without relying on a strong outline. The fine, hair-like rendering of the stamens provides a crisp counterpoint to the flowers’ softer surfaces.
Around them, the leaves supply both structure and contrast. Large foliage in the upper-left portion of the composition is articulated by an intricate network of veins, with darker greens gathered along folds and margins. Smaller leaves and unopened buds extend to the right. Their green casings shift towards reddish tips, allowing the viewer to read several stages of flowering within a single branch. This movement from compact bud to expansive bloom lends the composition an understated sense of growth.
Redouté uses the pale ground as an active element rather than a mere backdrop. The generous space around the stem makes every serrated edge, crossing leaf and slender junction easy to examine, while the absence of a constructed setting keeps attention on the plant’s architecture. Near the foot of the plate, the inscriptions “Hibiscus” and “Lavatera Phoenicea.” introduce the classificatory language of botanical publication in restrained, elegant lettering.

Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
