A commanding female figure rises through the centre in a pale, flowing garment, her arms extended amid strands of ornament, flowers and richly patterned forms. Below, a second figure kneels beside ornate bowls and clustered blooms. Warm apricot, rose and deep red are tempered by touches of green and beige, giving the densely decorated scene both theatrical intensity and unusual softness.
The work draws upon Gustave Flaubert’s historical novel Salammbô, first published in 1862 and set in ancient Carthage in the aftermath of the First Punic War. Its heroine, Salammbô, is associated with ritual, political conflict and an imagined antiquity of extraordinary splendour. Such literary and exotic subjects held considerable appeal in late nineteenth-century European visual culture. Mucha translates that taste for distant drama into the distinctive decorative language that made him one of the defining artists of Art Nouveau: sinuous contours, idealised figures and ornament conceived not as a border to the action, but as part of its very substance.
A closer look
The eye settles first on the standing figure’s serene face and elaborate headpiece, then follows the movement of her hair and garment downwards. Fine highlights articulate individual strands, while bead-like details enrich the pale costume. Her outstretched hands extend the composition laterally, interrupting its strong vertical rise; small stylised forms appear to stream from them, strengthening the impression of an incantation unfolding through gesture.
A different concentration of detail gathers at the lower right. Here, the kneeling figure is partially enclosed by layered leaves and petals in pink, orange and muted green. Two ceremonial-looking bowls anchor the lower edge, one decorated with intricate motifs that echo the surrounding patterns. These objects provide a note of visual weight beneath the more fluid upper passages, where long vertical strands resemble hanging silk or falling water. Mucha creates depth primarily by overlap rather than conventional perspective: figures, flowers and ornament occupy successive shallow layers, producing an atmosphere closer to a decorated stage or tapestry than a naturalistic interior.
The composition is asymmetric but carefully balanced. The kneeling figure and profusion of flowers on one side counter the sweep of the central woman’s costume and arms, while greens and subdued golds cool the prevailing range of coral, blush and rust. A gently rounded framing element contains the activity without making it static. At the lower left, Mucha’s small stylised signature is integrated discreetly into the decorative scheme.
Context and significance
Mucha was a Czech artist whose career became closely identified with the flourishing poster culture of Belle Époque Paris. His designs helped establish a highly recognisable form of Art Nouveau in which the human figure, lettering and ornament could operate as a unified graphic whole. Although his women are often remembered for their elegance, works such as Incantation (Salammbo) also reveal the structural discipline beneath that grace: contours direct the eye, repeated curves bind separate motifs together, and limited tonal modelling allows pattern to remain legible.
Here, literary drama is not illustrated through a single emphatic action. Instead, it is distilled into pose, colour and ceremonial detail. The result belongs equally to the worlds of narrative, theatre and decorative design—a particularly rich example of Mucha’s ability to make a scene feel suspended between human presence and ornament.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
