A woman reclines in the central foreground, her reddish-brown dress following the contours of the grass, while at the lower right a man and child move across the incline. Warm earth colours are set against cooler blues and soft beige tones, giving the scene both pastoral calm and a quiet sense of movement.
The painting belongs to a period when German artists were moving decisively away from naturalistic description. Macke became a leading figure in the circle associated with Der Blaue Reiter, founded the following year, and shared its interest in expressive colour and simplified form. Yet his work often remained closely connected to ordinary pleasures: walking, gardens, parks and excursions. Landpartie is characteristic in this respect. Its subject is modern leisure, but its visual structure is more concerned with rhythm, colour and the harmonious placement of people within the landscape than with anecdotal detail.
A closer look
The horizontal composition unfolds in distinct layers. Closest to us, the grassy foreground rises and falls in broad, fluid passages of brown, green and ochre, enlivened by small touches of red and orange. The reclining woman forms the visual anchor: her bent posture echoes the curve of the hillside, so that figure and terrain appear to participate in the same flowing movement. Soft-edged shadows prevent her from seeming detached from her surroundings.
To the right, the standing man and child introduce a more upright rhythm. Their forms are abbreviated rather than minutely described, and their muted clothing merges with the tones of the land. The man’s gesture and the pair’s forward movement carry the eye across the slope, counterbalancing the repose of the central figure. Smaller, less distinct presences elsewhere in the landscape add to the impression of a shared excursion without distracting from the principal group.
Tall trees rise at the upper left, loosely framing the scene in earthy greens and browns. Beyond them, the landscape opens into rolling hills beneath an expansive, clouded sky. Muted blues recede towards the distance, while pale beige and grey-blue transitions give the clouds a soft luminosity. Macke avoids a rigid horizon: its gentle curve continues the organic movement established below. The signature “Macke”, placed at the lower right, is integrated discreetly into the surrounding brushwork.

Landpartie was made at an especially fertile moment in Macke’s short career. His painting absorbed the lessons of the European avant-garde—above all the liberation of colour from purely descriptive duties—while retaining a distinctive clarity and warmth. Where some Expressionist art pursued psychological tension or urban unease, Macke frequently found his subjects in sociable, sunlit experience. Figures are often treated not as individual portraits but as coloured shapes within a larger pictorial order.
That approach is already evident here. The people, vegetation and distant hills are connected by repeated curves, softened contours and closely related tones. Nothing is rendered with laborious precision, yet the essentials of posture, weather and terrain remain immediately legible. We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
