The US Geological Survey, founded in 1879, became the preeminent national authority for mapping the physical character of the United States, and this sheet reflects the agency’s rigorous scientific tradition. Rather than presenting Zion as a scenic abstraction, the map renders it as a measurable terrain of contours, drainages, routes, and elevation change. The classic USGS topographic style uses closely spaced contour lines to reveal the sudden verticality of canyon walls, the tilted complexity of mesas and ridges, and the steep approaches to overlooks and high trails.
