marie-brizard-roger-vintage-anisette-poster-by-leonetto-cappiello-1912
Marie Brizard & Roger Vintage Anisette Poster by Leonetto Cappiello, 1912

Leonetto Cappiello’s Marie Brizard & Roger, created in 1912, turns an advertisement for anisette into a performance of colour and movement. A woman in a fitted white dress occupies the centre, holding a bottle in each hand as if presenting them from a stage. Her pale costume stands sharply against a background of blazing orange, red and yellow, while a green headpiece supplies a crisp, unexpected accent. Above and to the right, a second figure dressed in red leans into the scene with another bottle, intensifying its air of animated celebration.

An Italian artist who built his reputation in the flourishing poster culture of the early twentieth century, Cappiello helped establish a distinctly modern language for commercial design. His advertisements typically dispensed with crowded description in favour of simplified forms, emphatic contrasts and a single theatrical motif that could register immediately. In an urban setting filled with competing bills and placards, such economy was practical as well as artistic: a striking figure and a memorable silhouette could identify a brand before every word had been read. Marie Brizard & Roger exemplifies this direct approach, using human gesture and saturated colour to give the name of a drinks producer an unmistakable visual personality.

A closer look

The central figure provides the poster’s visual anchor. Her white dress is modelled with restrained folds and creases, enough to suggest the turn of her body without weakening the clarity of the silhouette. Dark outlines separate her from the shifting field of warm colour behind, while the paired bottles extend the composition to either side. Their labels contain finer decorative detail, creating small areas of intricacy within an otherwise broad and immediately legible design.

Cappiello balances this central presence asymmetrically. The red-clad figure in the upper-right corner introduces a strong diagonal exchange: her pose and raised bottle answer those of the woman below rather than merely repeating them. Cooler purple passages among the oranges create a suggestion of depth, while touches of green, black and white punctuate the dominant heat of the palette. At the left, a faint stone-like decorative form and indistinct foliage or architectural ornament provide just enough setting to prevent the figures from floating in complete abstraction.

The lettering forms a firm base beneath the activity above. “LES VIEILLES LIQUEURS” introduces the product line, while “MARIE BRIZARD & ROGER” appears in large white capitals across the lower section. References to “CURAÇAO” and “CHERRY BRANDY” widen the commercial message beyond anisette without competing with the brand name. This hierarchy is carefully judged: figures and bottles seize attention first, then the bold typography tells the viewer what to remember. Cappiello’s signature is visible at the lower left, tucked into the edge of the design.

Context and significance

The poster belongs to a period in which commercial art was becoming increasingly concise and psychologically astute. Rather than catalogue a product’s virtues through dense copy, Cappiello made the advertisement operate almost like an emblem. The celebratory figures do not explain the liqueurs; they create an atmosphere around them, translating conviviality into a compact arrangement of gesture, colour and brand lettering.

What remains especially effective is the tension between decorative richness and graphic restraint. The warm background appears fluid and festive, yet the overall construction is disciplined: one dominant figure, one answering figure, a limited group of emphatic colours and a clearly ordered block of text. More than a century after its creation, Marie Brizard & Roger still demonstrates how decisively Cappiello could make an advertisement read across a distance—and reward attention at close quarters.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
