Published in 1964 using survey data first gathered in 1897, the “Harlem Topographic Map” offers a fascinating layered view of southern Westchester, the Bronx approaches, and the Palisades-adjacent edge of New Jersey at a moment when rural landscapes were being absorbed into metropolitan New York. Created by the United States Geological Survey, it reflects the agency’s rigorous standards: contour lines articulate hills, valleys, and river corridors, while color differentiates land, water, and built environments with clarity and elegance. At a scale of 1:62,500, the map is intimate enough to reveal local geography yet broad enough to show the larger regional pattern of towns, waterways, railways, and roads that shaped suburban expansion.

Bronxville sits prominently within this carefully surveyed landscape, surrounded by communities that would become synonymous with the growth of affluent commuter suburbs: Eastchester, Tuckahoe, Scarsdale, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, Pelham, Pelham Manor, Larchmont, Mamaroneck, and White Plains. The map captures these places not as isolated towns, but as part of a connected urbanizing fabric, linked by rail corridors, major roadways, and river valleys. The Bronx River and Hutchinson River trace natural routes through the terrain, while the proximity of Long Island Sound anchors the eastern edge with maritime significance. In this way, the map documents both the physical landforms and the infrastructure that encouraged residential and commercial growth north of New York City.

The western portion extends toward the Hudson River and Tenafly, New Jersey, bringing into view one of the region’s defining natural boundaries. The Hudson is more than a scenic feature here: it is a major geographic axis around which settlement, transportation, industry, and recreation developed. Across the map, the USGS’s topographic language gives form to ridges, slopes, depressions, and drainage systems, revealing the underlying structure beneath the suburban street grid. Hills near Yonkers, the riverine corridors of Westchester, and the undulating ground around Bronxville and Scarsdale all appear as part of a larger geological story. The result is a map that is both practical and quietly beautiful, transforming elevation into a readable visual rhythm.

The inclusion of parks, reserves, and waterfront spaces adds another dimension to the map’s historical interest. Glen Island Park and Davis Park, along with other green spaces, remind us that this fast-developing region was also shaped by recreation, landscape planning, and public access to shorelines and open ground. Long Island Sound, with its inlets and coastal communities, frames Larchmont, New Rochelle, Pelham Manor, and Mamaroneck as places tied to both suburban life and maritime geography. The map’s colored design makes these relationships immediately legible: water bodies, urban areas, and landforms stand apart while remaining visually integrated. It is a compelling example of how topographic mapping can serve navigation, planning, and historical interpretation at once.

As a USGS production, the Harlem sheet belongs to a national project of measurement, classification, and public knowledge. Yet its particular appeal lies in the contrast between the 1897 survey foundation and the 1964 publication date, inviting comparison between late nineteenth-century terrain and twentieth-century urban transformation. The region shown here underwent immense change, from villages and estates to densely linked suburbs, commercial centers, parkways, rail lines, and residential neighborhoods. Bronxville, Pelham, New Rochelle, Yonkers, White Plains, and neighboring towns appear within a geography that made such growth possible: river valleys, coastal access, rolling uplands, and proximity to Manhattan. The map is therefore not merely a record of place, but a portrait of metropolitan evolution.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
