Published in 1947 from 1941 survey data, the “Chattanooga Topographical Map” presents one of Tennessee’s most dramatic urban landscapes with uncommon clarity and depth. Produced by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Tennessee Valley Authority, it captures Chattanooga at a pivotal mid-century moment, poised between its industrial past and the sweeping regional transformations of the TVA era. At a scale of 1:24,000, the map renders the city, its neighborhoods, transportation corridors, and surrounding uplands in precise topographic detail. Contour lines and shaded relief combine to give the terrain a strikingly dimensional quality, emphasizing how Chattanooga’s streets, railroads, and settlements were shaped by the enclosing ridges, river bends, and steep mountain slopes.

The map’s shaded relief is especially compelling, transforming scientific measurement into an almost sculptural portrait of the land. Chattanooga lies in a basin-like setting framed by commanding elevations, and the cartography makes this geography immediately legible. Signal Mountain rises to the northwest, Lookout Mountain dominates the southwest, and Missionary Ridge forms a long, historic spine to the east. Valleys, ravines, and slopes appear with a tangible sense of form, revealing the geological forces that folded and eroded this part of the Appalachian Valley and Ridge province. This is not merely a map of roads and place names, but a finely observed study of terrain—one that shows why Chattanooga has always been defined by movement through passes, along river corridors, and around formidable natural barriers.

At the heart of the sheet is Chattanooga itself, shown as a populated and increasingly complex city of neighborhoods, subdivisions, rail lines, and main roads. Brainerd and East Ridge appear within the wider urban fabric, while the adjacent landscape extends toward the Georgia border and the area around Fort Oglethorpe. The Tennessee River, one of the defining features of the region, curves through the scene as both a natural landmark and a commercial artery. Its presence hints at Chattanooga’s long importance as a transportation hub, where river traffic, railroads, and highways converged. The distinct depiction of rail lines is particularly evocative, recalling the city’s industrial prominence and its strategic role in connecting the American South with the Midwest and the eastern seaboard.

The landscape shown here is also layered with American history. Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge are names inseparable from the Civil War campaigns around Chattanooga, where control of high ground and movement through the Tennessee River valley proved decisive. Although this map was made for topographic rather than commemorative purposes, its depiction of the terrain helps explain the military significance of the region. The ridges, slopes, and approaches are rendered with such clarity that the strategic logic of the battlefield landscape becomes visible. Signal Mountain, too, stands prominently above the city, its elevated setting contrasting with the dense urban grid below. In this way, the map quietly unites geology, settlement, infrastructure, and memory.

As a record of Chattanooga in the 1940s, the map offers a fascinating view of a city and region before later waves of suburban expansion, highway construction, ecological change, and modern redevelopment. Numerous small lakes and water features are marked, along with the road network and built environment of the period, preserving details that may have since been altered or absorbed into later growth. The collaboration between the USGS and the Tennessee Valley Authority adds further significance, situating the map within an era of ambitious regional planning, flood control, electrification, and landscape management. Elegant, technical, and historically rich, it is a vivid cartographic portrait of a southern city inseparable from its mountains, river, and enduring topographic drama.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
