Published in 1973 using survey data from 1971, the “Ellijay Quadrangle” presents a precise and evocative portrait of northwestern Georgia at a moment when rural landscapes, mountain roads, and forested valleys still defined much of Gilmer County. Produced by the United States Geological Survey at the detailed 1:24,000 scale, the map centers on Ellijay, a historic Appalachian foothills town set amid ridges, streams, and winding transportation routes. Its topographic language is both practical and beautiful: contour lines articulate the hilly terrain, while subtle greens, browns, and blues distinguish forest, elevation, and water. The result is a richly layered document of place, revealing the relationship between settlement, terrain, and the natural corridors that shaped local movement and development.

The United States Geological Survey brought to this map nearly a century of institutional expertise in measuring and depicting the American landscape. Founded in 1879, the USGS became the nation’s foremost authority on topographic mapping, translating field surveys, aerial observation, and geodetic control into maps of remarkable clarity. In the “Ellijay Quadrangle,” that tradition is evident in the disciplined precision of the contouring, the careful classification of roads and trails, and the exact placement of rivers, forks, creeks, and inhabited places. Such quadrangle maps were indispensable to planners, engineers, foresters, hikers, and local governments, but they also now serve as historical records, preserving the look and organization of a region at a particular point in time.

Ellijay itself occupies a compelling geographical position, where mountain waterways and valleys converge to form a natural hub. The Cartecay River and Coosawattee River, both central to the area’s identity, are mapped alongside the North and South Forks of the Cartecay and a lacework of smaller creeks and streams. These waterways explain much of the area’s settlement pattern: roads follow valleys, farms and communities gather near gentler ground, and ridgelines create both barriers and landmarks. Highways such as 76 and 52 appear as important modern arteries, threading through a landscape long shaped by older footpaths, trails, and river crossings. The map captures this dialogue between human route-making and Appalachian terrain.

The surrounding Chattahoochee National Forest gives the quadrangle much of its visual and historical character. Established in the twentieth century to protect and manage large tracts of Georgia’s mountain forests, the national forest represents a major chapter in American conservation, land restoration, and recreation. On the map, forested areas and rugged contours suggest a landscape of steep slopes, wooded hollows, and secluded ridges, where elevation and vegetation together create the distinctive texture of the southern Appalachians. Parks, trails, and forest roads point toward the recreational identity that would become increasingly important to the region. The map therefore shows not only a working landscape of roads and communities, but also a protected mountain environment valued for its beauty and ecological richness.

As a historical document of the early 1970s, the “Ellijay Quadrangle” offers a fascinating baseline for understanding subsequent change in one of Georgia’s beloved mountain regions. The map predates many later waves of residential expansion, tourism development, and infrastructural growth, preserving Ellijay and its surrounding valleys before the full transformation of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Its dense topographic detail rewards close study: every ridge, creek, bend in the road, and valley floor contributes to a portrait of place grounded in measurement yet rich with narrative. For collectors drawn to Appalachian geography, Georgia history, or the technical elegance of USGS cartography, this map is a distinguished representation of landscape, memory, and regional identity.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
