Published in 1959 using survey data gathered in 1958, the United States Geological Survey’s “Round Top” captures a richly textured portion of Central Texas at a moment when rural landscapes, small-town life, and postwar development still existed in delicate balance. At a 1:24,000 scale, the map gives intimate attention to the populated place of Round Top, a settlement now celebrated for its historic architecture, antiques trade, galleries, and enduring cultural identity. Here, however, Round Top appears within its broader geographic setting: a compact town embedded in a working countryside of roads, creeks, fields, wooded tracts, and scattered rural landmarks. The map is both practical and evocative, presenting the terrain with the clarity of scientific survey while preserving the atmosphere of a mid-century Texas community.

The US Geological Survey, long regarded as the authoritative cartographic institution for American topography, brought its disciplined visual language to this map. Contour lines trace the subtle rises and falls of the land, revealing the undulating character of the region around Round Top. Green shading marks forested or cultivated areas, distinguishing vegetated ground from the more open agricultural landscape. Roads such as County Road 4 and Farm Road 1457 thread through the sheet, tying together homes, parcels, rural communities, and fields. This is not a dramatic mountain landscape, but rather a finely modulated terrain of low hills, shallow valleys, and drainage patterns—precisely the kind of landscape that topographic mapping renders legible and meaningful.

Water gives the map much of its geographic structure. Piney Creek and Waller Creek wind through the countryside, accompanied by numerous unnamed ponds and small lakes that speak to both natural drainage and rural land management. These water bodies would have been essential features in a farming and ranching landscape, supporting livestock, agriculture, and settlement patterns. The map’s contour lines reveal how these creeks occupy gentle valleys, while nearby ridges and slopes shape the placement of roads and property. Such details make the sheet a compact environmental history of the area, documenting not merely where things were, but how the physical landscape influenced human use, movement, and habitation in late-1950s Fayette County.

Round Top’s later reputation as a destination for art, antiques, preservation, and cultural tourism makes this map especially intriguing. In 1958, the town and its surroundings were still depicted primarily as a rural Texas landscape, defined by farms, minor roads, wooded patches, and scattered landmarks rather than by the visitor economy for which the area is now widely known. The map therefore offers a valuable historical contrast, showing the framework upon which later change would unfold. Its symbols and place names hint at churches, schools, residences, and community features, while the broader countryside reflects patterns of settlement rooted in agriculture and local connectivity. It is a portrait of place before modern visibility transformed Round Top’s identity.

As a cartographic object, “Round Top” exemplifies the elegance of mid-twentieth-century USGS mapping: restrained, precise, and information-rich. Its color system is functional yet visually appealing, with green vegetation, blue watercourses, black cultural features, and brown elevation contours working together to produce a layered reading of the land. The result is a map that rewards close attention, revealing the relationship between natural form and human occupation with remarkable economy. For collectors drawn to Texas history, rural landscapes, or the evolution of small communities, this map offers more than geographic data. It preserves a specific moment in the life of Round Top and its countryside, when roads, creeks, fields, and hills formed the quiet architecture of everyday place.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
