Titled simply “West Virginia,” this 1896 state map by Rand McNally & Company distills a pivotal American landscape at the close of the nineteenth century into precise, authoritative lines. Issued by the famed Chicago firm that set national standards for clarity and accuracy, it balances political definition with a wealth of physical detail. Counties are crisply partitioned and named, townships and roads are carefully traced, and the state’s web of rail connections is both drawn across the terrain and enumerated in a dedicated list at right. The result is a lucid portrait of a young state in motion—its borders, settlements, and arteries of commerce all legible at a glance—capturing West Virginia’s emergence as an industrial and transportation crossroads in the Appalachian interior.

The cartographic style is classic Rand McNally: elegant yet workmanlike, with disciplined line weights, exacting labels, and a clean, confident layout that privileges usability without sacrificing beauty. An understated border frames the state, while typographic hierarchy guides the eye from county names to smaller towns and local roads. Rivers course across the sheet with measured curvature; mountain ranges are outlined to signal relief and passage. Political information and physical geography are harmonized, allowing readers to follow county lines as naturally as they trace watersheds. The composition feels at once comprehensive and navigable, a hallmark of the company’s late-nineteenth-century atlases.

West Virginia’s iconic geography is rendered with particular care. The Ohio River defines the western edge, tying Wheeling, Parkersburg, and Huntington into a broad riverine economy; the Potomac and its South Branch carve out the Eastern Panhandle around Martinsburg. The Kanawha River cuts through the center to Charleston, while the Monongahela’s valley anchors Fairmont, Clarksburg, and Morgantown in the north. Along the Allegheny Front and the folded ridges of the Appalachians, the map traces mountain chains and river gorges—including the celebrated New River corridor—hinting at the rugged topography that shaped settlement and transport. County delineations—Kanawha, Cabell, Wood, Marion, Harrison, Monongalia, Ohio, Berkeley, and others—speak to jurisdictions both familiar and, in some cases, historically configured differently than today.

Railroads take pride of place as the state’s steel sinews. The Baltimore & Ohio strides across the northern counties and through the panhandles, stitching Wheeling, Parkersburg, Grafton, Fairmont, and Martinsburg into the national grid. To the south, the Chesapeake & Ohio follows the Kanawha and New River valleys, linking Huntington to Charleston and onward through the coalfields, while the Norfolk & Western pushes into the southern mountains. Junctions and branch lines are crisply labeled, their interconnections mirrored in the catalog of railroads printed at right—an at-a-glance index to the era’s dominant carriers. Together, these routes chart the late-century surge in coal, timber, glass, and salt, revealing how topography and enterprise coalesced into corridors of trade.

The human geography is equally vivid. Charleston presides as capital along the Kanawha, while Huntington thrives as a strategic river-and-rail hub. Parkersburg anchors the Little Kanawha’s mouth, and Wheeling—once a state capital—retains its prominence on the Ohio. Fairmont, Clarksburg, and Morgantown dot the Monongahela’s lift toward Pennsylvania, with Morgantown already poised as a university town. Martinsburg stands as the gateway to the East, its rail and road links threading the Potomac gap. In the far north, the modern city of Weirton corresponds to earlier settlements along the upper Ohio, a reminder that names and jurisdictions evolve even as geography endures. Read today, the map is a sophisticated key to West Virginia’s past—its places, its pathways, and its promise.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
