August Macke’s Straßen-Passanten (1914) turns a group of city pedestrians into a restless pattern of bodies, hats and intersecting contours. Rather than settling on a single protagonist, the portrait-format composition distributes attention across the crowd: dark, loosely articulated figures gather in the centre, while others enter at the margins or appear to recede into the pale, minimally defined surroundings. The restricted range of black, grey and warm beige gives this particular work an unusually subdued character, yet its shifting forms retain the rhythmic energy associated with Macke’s treatment of modern life.

Macke was one of the leading painters connected with Der Blaue Reiter, the German Expressionist group whose artists pursued new relationships between colour, form and subjective experience. Created in the final year of his life, Straßen-Passanten belongs to an intensely experimental moment in early twentieth-century European art. The everyday street scene offered a distinctly modern subject: anonymous people encountered in passing, compressed into shared urban space. Macke translates that transient experience into simplified shapes and visual rhythms, moving away from descriptive realism without abandoning the recognisable gestures and silhouettes of the crowd.

A closer look

The central figures overlap so closely that individual bodies partly dissolve into one another. Faces are barely stated; identity is conveyed instead through posture, profile and clothing. Several hats punctuate the mass with compact dark shapes, while alternating passages of charcoal grey and softer shadow suggest folds of fabric without labouring their detail. This combination of abbreviation and variation allows the pedestrians to remain distinct enough to read as people, yet unified enough to function as a single moving group.

At the left, more lightly handled figures extend the scene beyond its apparent boundaries. Their reduced definition gives them the quality of people glimpsed only momentarily, while the asymmetric arrangement prevents the crowd from becoming static. Along the lower edge, firm ground lines are largely absent, so the figures seem to drift through the composition rather than stand within a conventionally constructed street. Depth emerges principally through overlap, shifts in scale and the gradual softening of contours.

The setting itself remains elusive. In the upper right, flowing marks hint at buildings or other features of the urban environment; above the crowd, wavering lines might suggest branches or architectural forms, but neither is fixed into exact description. The warm pale ground is active rather than empty, its rough, atmospheric handling pressing forward between the darker silhouettes. As a result, figure and setting continually exchange places: a contour may define a shoulder at one moment and merge into the movement of the street at the next.

Context and significance

Although Macke is often associated with brilliant colour, Straßen-Passanten demonstrates how effectively he could build a composition through tonal contrast and rhythmic line. Its muted palette concentrates attention on the mechanics of looking in a crowd—partial views, overlapping bodies and forms caught before they can be fully registered. The subject is ordinary, but its treatment reflects the wider avant-garde rethinking of representation: appearances are condensed into the elements that make an encounter feel immediate.

The painting’s lasting interest lies in this balance between observation and abstraction. Hats, shoulders and shadowed garments keep the scene anchored in daily experience, while blurred boundaries and floating spatial relationships turn the passing crowd into an almost musical sequence of dark and light. It is both a street scene and a study of urban movement, shaped by the fleeting, fragmentary nature of modern vision.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
