Labelled La Pêche beneath the specimen, the fruit sits slightly off-centre, its rounded form modelled through exceptionally soft transitions from warm yellow to flushed coral red. Long, cool-green leaves extend around it in an asymmetric arrangement, lending the study the unforced rhythm of a branch observed in nature rather than a conventionally formal still life.
The plate belongs to the early nineteenth-century tradition of the florilegium: a publication devoted to presenting selected flowers and plants—and, in this case, cultivated fruit—with both scientific attentiveness and artistic refinement. Redouté was among the period’s most accomplished flower painters and botanical illustrators, admired for combining clarity of structure with unusual delicacy of colour. His career was closely connected to the cultivated gardens and courtly horticultural culture of France, where rare and carefully tended plants became subjects of serious study as well as aesthetic appreciation. A closer look
The peach dominates the lower centre of the plate. Its contour is almost perfectly rounded, yet small tonal changes prevent it from appearing diagrammatic: pale gold gathers across the fuller surface, while a red blush deepens towards one side. Fine marks suggest the fruit’s velvety skin without making it look coarse, and gentle shading around the edges gives the peach a persuasive sense of volume. The light seems to settle gradually across it, rather than striking from a single dramatic source.
Above and beside the fruit, the leaves provide a sharper visual counterpoint. Their elongated forms taper to fine points, with serrated margins and branching veins articulated in slender lines. Variations within the greens distinguish the upper surfaces from shadowed folds, while overlapping leaves create a modest but effective recession into depth. A thin brown branch runs diagonally through the arrangement, connecting fruit and foliage and anchoring the composition with subtle changes of woody colour.
The near-white ground removes every distraction. Against this spacious field, each contour remains legible: the curve of the peach, the narrow stems and the irregular edges of the foliage. The inscription below is correspondingly restrained. Its elegant lettering identifies the subject without competing with it, preserving the plate’s balance between botanical record and independent work of art.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 23 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
