Continua a leggerePierre Joseph Redouté’s Rosa Clynophylla (1817–1824), published in 1817, gives a single rose stem the poise of a formal portrait. Two open white flowers occupy either side of the central growth, their warm yellow stamens set against petals that shift delicately from ivory shadow to luminous white. Around them, serrated leaves, immature buds and slender branching stems form an asymmetrical arrangement, held in crisp relief against a pale cream ground.
Redouté became especially renowned for his studies of roses, bringing scientific observation and exceptional compositional refinement into close alignment. His work belongs to an early nineteenth-century culture in which botanical illustration served both the classification of plants and a growing appetite for beautifully presented natural history. Rather than treating the specimen as a decorative bouquet, he isolates its characteristic structures: flower, bud, leaf and stem are made readily legible, yet the result retains the grace and rhythm of an accomplished flower painting.
A closer look
The composition rises from a narrow lower stem before dividing into a loose canopy of foliage. Leaves overlap without becoming crowded, and their varied angles prevent the plant from appearing diagrammatically rigid. Fine veins spread through each blade towards sharply notched edges, while subtle changes of green distinguish younger, lighter growth from deeper-toned leaves. Near the base, small projecting points and irregularities preserve the impression of an observed, living specimen rather than an idealised emblem.
The two principal blooms provide the plate’s strongest visual contrast. Their pale petals curl and overlap with minute gradations of tone, creating depth without heavy shadow. At each centre, a dense cluster of yellow stamens introduces a concentrated note of colour and intricate detail. The fine, hair-like structures are carefully differentiated, while the surrounding petals remain broad and softly articulated. Nearby buds add another stage in the plant’s development: tightly enclosed forms poised against the openness of the mature flowers.
Negative space is central to the design. The cream background leaves generous air around the outermost leaves and blossoms, allowing the eye to follow every fork and curve of the stem. One gently bending leaf at the upper right echoes the rounded contours of the flowers, giving the otherwise still botanical study a quiet sense of movement. Along the lower edge, the identifying inscription reads “Rosa Clynophylla. Rosier à feuilles penchées”, connecting the elegant presentation to the plate’s classificatory purpose.
Context and significance
Botanical illustration in Redouté’s period occupied a productive space between science and art. Accurate representations allowed plants to be studied and compared, while sophisticated arrangements made natural-history publications desirable objects in their own right. Redouté was particularly adept at reconciling these demands: his specimens are clear enough to be instructive, but never appear merely clinical. Minute linear shading defines the folds of petals, the texture of buds and the modelling of foliage without sacrificing the overall lightness of the page.
Rosa Clynophylla demonstrates why his roses remain so closely associated with the highest traditions of botanical art. Its appeal lies not in dramatic colour or elaborate setting, but in disciplined attention—the fine serrations of a leaf, the tonal turn of a white petal and the measured interval between one branch and the next. The plate rewards both botanical curiosity and prolonged looking, transforming close observation into a composition of remarkable calm.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
