A large, fully opened bloom commands the centre in deep rose-pink and crimson, while paler flowers, tightly gathered buds and serrated green leaves extend around it. Isolated against a warm, neutral ground, the plant appears remarkably present: every fold of a petal, branching stem and fine thorn can be examined without distraction.
The study belongs to the great flowering of botanical illustration in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, when scientific description and refined image-making were closely connected. Redouté, a French artist particularly celebrated for his roses, brought exceptional delicacy to this tradition. Such illustrations answered a growing European interest in the classification and cultivation of exotic and ornamental plants, yet they were also made to satisfy collectors who valued flowers as subjects of visual pleasure. Here, accuracy never becomes dry; the rose is recorded with clarity while retaining its softness, colour and sense of living growth.
A closer look
The composition rises vertically along a gently curving stem, its slight asymmetry giving the plant a natural rhythm. The principal bloom opens towards the viewer, its densely layered petals shifting from saturated red-pink in the shadowed folds to lighter, almost translucent edges. No two petals are treated identically: subtle changes in tone separate overlapping forms and give the flower convincing volume without the need for a surrounding garden or landscape.
Above and to the right, smaller roses offer a quieter counterpoint. Their paler pink petals are more loosely spaced, revealing different stages in the plant’s flowering cycle. Nearby buds remain tightly closed, their compact forms contrasting with the broad central rosette. This progression from bud to open flower makes the plate more than a single floral portrait; it becomes a concise study of botanical development.
The foliage provides its own intricate structure. Leaves cluster most strongly towards the lower left, where fine pale veins divide the green surfaces into sharply observed networks. Serrated margins, slender stems and visible thorns temper the luxuriance of the blossoms with harder linear accents. The surrounding negative space is equally important, allowing each offshoot and silhouette to remain legible. Along the lower edge, the inscriptions “Rosa Indica subviolacea” and “P. J. We print and frame maps and artwork in 23 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
