Positioned just away from the centre, the ship advances through rolling waves, its masts, rigging and small fluttering flags picked out with delicate precision. Around it, the palette softens into light blue, muted grey and warm beige: sea and atmosphere seem almost to merge at the luminous horizon, making the engineered solidity of the vessel appear both commanding and remarkably small.
Aivazovsky was among the foremost marine painters of the nineteenth century, celebrated for turning the changing behaviour of water into a subject of Romantic drama. Trained at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St Petersburg and closely associated with the Black Sea, he returned throughout his long career to ships, storms, naval encounters and open horizons. Here, however, spectacle gives way to measured calm. The steamship belongs to a period when steam propulsion was reshaping navigation, yet its tall masts preserve the visual language of the sailing vessel: modern machinery and older maritime traditions occupy the same graceful silhouette.
A closer look
The ship forms the composition’s principal concentration of dark colour. Its brown hull stretches laterally across the pale water, while thin vertical masts and fine lines of rigging rise into the hazy sky. Minute flags animate these otherwise slender structures, introducing brief accents of colour and suggesting the movement of air above the sea. Subtle variations across the hull catch reflected light from the surrounding water, preventing the vessel from becoming a flat, isolated shape.
Aivazovsky gives the foreground waves a gentle but palpable momentum. Curving bands of light blue and soft white overlap one another, with a small crest of foam at the lower left and further ripples continuing towards the right edge. Highlights gather along the lifted surfaces of the water, while the troughs remain cooler and more subdued. These shifts in tone establish movement without turning the sea into a storm; the ship appears to negotiate a living, changeable surface rather than confront an overwhelming force.
Above, the sky occupies much of the horizontal composition. Warm beige near the horizon passes gradually into muted blue overhead, creating an atmospheric veil around the distant forms. Faint landmasses may be discerned as softened outlines, but they remain secondary to the open maritime space. The boundary between sea and sky is exceptionally delicate, and this restraint enlarges the apparent distance. In the lower right corner, the signature and date, “Aivazovsky 1875”, anchor the otherwise expansive scene.
Context and significance
Marine painting allowed nineteenth-century artists to bring together close observation, technological change and the Romantic fascination with nature’s scale. Russian Steamship is especially engaging because its drama lies not in disaster or violent weather, but in proportion. The vessel is carefully articulated, yet it remains surrounded by far greater fields of air and water. Human ingenuity is present in the ship’s complex construction, while the sea retains visual command of the painting.
The work also records a transitional maritime world. Steam power offered ships greater independence from wind, but many nineteenth-century steamships continued to carry extensive masts and sails. Aivazovsky turns that hybrid form into an elegant linear pattern, poised between the low weight of the hull and the open sky. The result is at once a portrait of a particular kind of vessel and an atmospheric meditation on travel across an immense, luminous sea.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
