st-raphael-vintage-quinquina-poster-by-henry-gerbault-1920
St. Raphaël Vintage Quinquina Poster by Henry Gerbault, 1920

Dating from 1920, Henry Gerbault’s C’est la Santé, St. Raphaël, Quinquina turns an apéritif advertisement into a comic encounter between earthly appetite and heavenly approval. Against a lucid blue ground, a white-robed angel pours a red drink for a prosperous, top-hatted gentleman seated at a small table. Cherubic figures hover overhead, while emphatic lettering frames the scene: the buoyant claim “C’EST LA SANTÉ” above and the brand name “ST. RAPHAËL QUINQUINA” in commanding red capitals below.

Gerbault was a French illustrator and poster designer active from the late nineteenth into the early twentieth century, known for stylish figures, decorative clarity and an assured sense of humour. Here, those qualities serve the increasingly sophisticated world of commercial art, in which a memorable character and slogan could give a branded drink its own social identity. Quinquina was a wine-based apéritif flavoured with cinchona bark, associated with quinine; the poster’s declaration that it is “health” plays lightly upon those tonic associations while presenting the drink as an accompaniment to leisure and good living.

A closer look

The central exchange is carefully staged. On the left, the angel leans forward from a bank of cloud, pale robes falling in long, fluid folds. The halo and wings establish the supernatural joke immediately, yet the action is gratifyingly practical: the angel’s attention is fixed upon the bottle and glass. Opposite, the seated man raises his own glass with evident satisfaction. His striped waistcoat, formal hat and animated face give him the air of a genial boulevard character rather than a solemn allegorical figure.

Between them, the compact table acts as the compositional hinge. The red liquid in the glass forms a small but concentrated note of colour, echoed and greatly amplified by the scarlet typography below. Warm pinks, yellows and flesh tones stand out crisply against the cool blue background, while the angel’s white clothing creates a bright interval between the two principal figures. Gerbault suggests volume through highlights and restrained shadows, but keeps the setting deliberately shallow so that the scene retains the immediate legibility of a poster.

Smaller details extend the humour without disturbing the graphic hierarchy. Winged cherubs cluster in the upper portion of the design, turning the sky into a playful audience for the transaction below. Near the gentleman’s chair, a small collared dog provides a decidedly terrestrial counterpoint to the celestial company. The contrast between cloud-borne angel and solidly seated drinker is particularly effective: fantasy occupies one half of the composition, café-like sociability the other, and the glass connects the two.

Context and significance

By the early twentieth century, French beverage advertising had become a prominent field for illustrators able to combine narrative wit with instantly recognisable branding. Gerbault’s poster belongs to that culture of public display, where simplified colour, large lettering and theatrical characterisation had to communicate quickly. Its two principal bands of text are readable at a glance, but the comic scene rewards longer attention—a balance central to successful poster design.

The result is more than a straightforward product announcement. Gerbault constructs a miniature social comedy in which fashion, indulgence and mock-divine sanction meet beneath a brilliantly economical slogan. Its lasting appeal lies in that poised mixture of elegance and absurdity: a worldly gentleman, an obliging angel and a glass of quinquina sharing the same crisp, vividly coloured stage.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
