Alphonse Mucha’s The Brethren School in Ivancice, created in 1914, turns an episode of Moravian history into a richly inhabited panorama. An outdoor lesson occupies the foreground, where pupils, teachers and visitors gather beneath trees in softly diffused autumn light. Beyond them, the walls, turrets and church tower of the sixteenth-century town emerge through a veil of muted greens, ochres and grey, making the settlement appear at once geographically present and suspended in historical memory.

The setting held particular significance for Mucha: Ivancice was his Moravian hometown, and here he looked back to the religious, educational and literary culture of the Bohemian Brethren. The lesson has been interrupted by the arrival of Karel Sr. of Žerotin, a patron of the Brethren community. Books, copies of the Bible and a printing press connect the apparently pastoral gathering to the group’s commitment to scholarship and the printed word. The work belongs to the expansive historical vision that preoccupied Mucha in the later part of his career, far removed in scale and purpose from the elegant theatrical and advertising posters for which he remains widely known.

A closer look

The composition unfolds in layers. At the left, a winding path leads through shadowed ground towards the central assembly, its curve drawing the eye into the crowd rather than presenting the scene as a rigid tableau. Figures sit, stand and lean towards one another in overlapping clusters; some attend to books and papers, while others appear to respond to the visiting party. Their gestures create a gentle current of movement across the foreground, and the varied folds and patterns of their clothing distinguish individuals without breaking the scene’s communal rhythm.

On the right, a covered pavilion provides a more sheltered focus for teaching and gathering. Its architecture introduces firmer lines among the fluid forms of foliage and dress, while a pot of flowers near the lower edge adds a small, domestic note. Mucha avoids isolating a single heroic protagonist. Instead, the human activity is distributed across the landscape, with learning presented as a shared undertaking. Even the books scattered among the figures feel integrated into everyday life rather than arranged as formal emblems.

The town above the gathering is deliberately quieter. Pale walls and rooftops recede into the luminous distance, while the vertical church tower rises above the low horizon. Tall trees at the upper left act as a natural frame, balancing the pavilion and enclosing the open-air classroom. Soft transitions between green foliage, brown earth and yellowed autumn growth bind foreground and background together; shadows cross the path, but there are few harsh contrasts. The result is spacious and serene despite the number of figures.

Context and significance

Mucha’s international reputation was established during the Belle Époque through designs distinguished by sinuous contours, decorative pattern and poised female figures. Yet his ambitions also extended to the history and cultural identity of the Slavic peoples. The Brethren School in Ivancice forms part of The Slav Epic, the cycle of twenty monumental historical compositions on which he worked during the early twentieth century. Rather than treating history solely as a succession of rulers and battles, the cycle also gives weight to religion, education, language and collective cultural life.

That emphasis is especially clear here. The printing press and Bibles point to the Brethren’s role in Czech literary culture, while the open-air school evokes the humanist ideals associated with their teaching. Mucha combines these themes with an intimate knowledge of place: Ivancice is not merely a picturesque backdrop, but the landscape through which a larger history of learning is made tangible. The enduring interest of the scene lies in this balance between public history and local recollection, conveyed through a gathering that feels active, sociable and deeply rooted in its surroundings.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
