Two open pink blooms occupy the upper part of the composition, accompanied by smaller buds and a dense arrangement of serrated leaves. Their asymmetrical placement gives the plant a natural, gently spreading movement, while the pale, unadorned ground isolates every petal, vein and thorn-like projection with exceptional clarity.
Redouté was among the most admired botanical artists of the early nineteenth century, renowned for reconciling close observation with an instinct for elegant arrangement. His flower studies belong to a period in which botany, horticulture and the cultivation of ornamental plants attracted an increasingly wide audience. Choix des plus belles fleurs reflects that culture in its very title—“a selection of the most beautiful flowers”—bringing scientific attention to plant structure into productive conversation with the visual pleasures of colour, abundance and cultivated form.
A closer look
The largest rose opens near the upper centre, its petals unfolding in concentric, irregular layers. Pale blush tones catch the light across the raised folds, deepening towards warmer pink and red at the curled edges and in the recesses between petals. A second bloom leans towards the left, preventing the arrangement from becoming rigidly frontal. Nearby buds record other stages of flowering: one remains tightly furled at the centre-right, while another emerges among slender leaves above.
Below the blossoms, the foliage forms a darker and more substantial base. Individual leaves overlap without losing their distinct profiles; their toothed margins, central ribs and fine networks of veins are all clearly articulated. Redouté varies the greens from fresh, yellowish notes to deeper woodland tones, using these shifts to distinguish leaves that would otherwise merge into a single mass. Small projecting points around the stems and leaf bases introduce a sharper botanical detail beneath the softness of the flowers.
The spacious beige ground is integral to the plate’s effect. With no garden setting, vase or decorative border to compete for attention, the stem appears almost suspended on the page. This restraint makes the composition both descriptive and ornamental: the eye can examine the construction of a bud or the serration of a leaf, then step back to appreciate the plant as a balanced silhouette. The small inscriptions at the lower edge restore the work’s character as a published botanical plate rather than an informal floral arrangement.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Our London studio works from carefully selected source material from museums, libraries, archives and private collections. We restore age-related damage, faded colour and imperfect reproduction while preserving the artist’s composition, brushwork, line, texture and period character.
We do not use generative AI to redraw, reinterpret or invent the artwork. Digital restoration is used only to recover and reproduce the original work as faithfully as possible.
Once restored, the master artwork is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.
Our giclée art prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks for a rich, museum-quality finish. Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
