Pierre-Joseph Redouté’s cyclamen, plate 29 from Choix des plus belles fleurs, published in 1827, presents the plant as a complete and quietly animated specimen. Slender, curving stems carry white flowers whose swept-back petals deepen to blush pink at their bases, while broad green leaves spread below in an irregular, overlapping cluster. The arrangement is slightly asymmetric, rising towards the upper left and leaving generous open space around the foliage—a balance of botanical clarity and decorative grace characteristic of Redouté’s finest flower studies.

Redouté was among the most admired botanical artists of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, earning the enduring epithet “the Raphael of flowers”. His reputation rested on an unusual ability to reconcile two distinct demands: the careful description of a living plant and the refined visual pleasure expected of a luxury flower book. Choix des plus belles fleurs belongs to this cultivated tradition, in which botanical illustrations were valued by gardeners and naturalists while also being appreciated as accomplished works of art. This plate’s polished, hand-coloured treatment turns the cyclamen’s distinctive structure into an elegant exercise in line, tonal gradation and spatial restraint.

A closer look

The flowers occupy the upper part of the composition, each held on its own fine stem. Their pale petals are modelled with exceptionally subtle shading: white passes into cool grey in the folds and then into soft rose around the flower’s centre. Small shadows beneath the recurved petals establish their depth without disturbing the overall lightness of the study. The stems bend in different directions, giving the group a gentle rhythm rather than the rigid order of a diagram.

Across the centre and lower portion, the leaves provide a denser counterweight. Their rounded forms overlap one another, but variations in scale, angle and tone keep each leaf legible. Fine veins branch across the surfaces, while darker greens gather at curled edges and in the shaded spaces between them. Highlights lend some leaves a smooth, almost polished appearance; others recede into muted olive tones. This alternation between luminous flowers and weightier foliage gives the plant a convincing sense of layered growth.

Smaller buds and developing blooms extend towards the lower right, adding another stage of the cyclamen’s natural cycle to the open flowers above. They also prevent the composition from becoming too symmetrical, directing the eye along a descending curve through the stems. Beneath the specimen, the understated label “Cyclamen.” anchors the study with the concise authority of botanical classification, while the softly toned ground ensures that no extraneous detail competes with the plant itself.

Context and significance

Botanical illustration in Redouté’s period occupied a productive space between science, horticulture and the decorative arts. A successful plate needed to preserve recognisable details of growth and form, yet publications devoted to choice flowers also demanded elegance of presentation. Redouté’s work became especially influential because he rarely allowed one purpose to overwhelm the other. Here, the leaf venation, varying stages of bloom and characteristic posture of the petals are carefully observed, but the specimen is also shaped into a composition of arcs, clusters and pauses.

The plate rewards both kinds of attention. From a distance, its white, pink and deep green forms create a poised floral arrangement; closer inspection reveals minute shifts of colour, the branching structure of the veins and the delicate shadows that separate one petal or leaf from the next. It is this union of precision and spaciousness that makes Redouté’s cyclamen more than a record of a plant: it is a particularly lucid example of the cultivated flower book at its early nineteenth-century height.
