Rising diagonally from the lower left towards the upper right, the stem carries clusters of soft pink blossoms and fresh green leaves, their delicate forms held in careful balance. The simplicity of the arrangement is deceptive: subtle shifts of tone give the petals volume, while the darker foliage and muted brown stem establish a gentle but precise visual structure.
Redouté was among the most celebrated botanical painters of his era, admired for reconciling close observation with an unusually refined sense of design. This plate belongs to the flourishing culture of early nineteenth-century natural-history illustration, when botanical images were expected to make plant structures intelligible while also appealing to a wider cultivated audience. Its association with Jean-Jacques Rousseau is particularly apt: beyond his philosophical writings, Rousseau maintained a serious interest in botany and helped present the subject as an attentive, accessible study of the natural world.
A closer look
The branch begins near the lower-left edge, where the brown stem appears comparatively rough and substantial. From this narrow base, the composition opens gradually into alternating leaves and flowers. The diagonal is enlivened by smaller offshoots, so that the plant never becomes a rigid botanical diagram; instead, its growth feels measured yet organic. Ample negative space surrounds every contour, allowing individual leaves, buds and petals to remain distinct.
The richest concentration of blossom occurs towards the upper left. Some flowers are fully open, revealing layered petal structures, while others remain more tightly gathered. Their pastel pink is modulated rather than flat: deeper colour settles around folds and overlapping edges, while paler areas create a softly luminous effect. The leaves provide a firmer counterpoint. Their greens range from bright, fresh tones to more shaded hues, and fine veins articulate the surfaces without overwhelming them.
On the upper right, several small leaves reach away from the central stem, extending the composition into the surrounding space. This outward movement balances the heavier cluster of blossoms opposite. Redouté also differentiates textures with considerable restraint: the smooth petals, crisply described foliage and slightly rugged branch are each rendered with their own character. The result is both an analytical study and a decoratively poised arrangement.
Context and significance
Botanical illustration at this period occupied a productive middle ground between science and art. A plate needed enough clarity to support recognition and study, yet its effectiveness also depended upon selection, spacing and visual hierarchy. Redouté’s reputation rests precisely on this combination. Rather than crowding the page with contextual scenery, he gave the specimen an almost portrait-like presence, using isolation to focus attention on habit, structure and colour.
Plate 45 exemplifies that method particularly well. Its pale, nearly empty ground is not merely a backdrop but an active element, setting off the branching silhouette and making the smallest tonal distinctions easier to see. Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Every restored art print begins with the original artist’s work—never an AI-generated replacement.
Our London studio works from carefully selected source material from museums, libraries, archives and private collections. We restore age-related damage, faded colour and imperfect reproduction while preserving the artist’s composition, brushwork, line, texture and period character.
We do not use generative AI to redraw, reinterpret or invent the artwork. Digital restoration is used only to recover and reproduce the original work as faithfully as possible.
Once restored, the master artwork is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.
Our giclée art prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks for a rich, museum-quality finish. Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
