la-croix-rouge-vintage-genever-poster-by-armand-rassenfosse-1894
La Croix Rouge Vintage Genever Poster by Armand Rassenfosse, 1894

Armand Rassenfosse’s Genièvre La Croix Rouge, created in 1894, turns a beverage advertisement into a compact scene of fashionable sociability. Three figures gather around a small table: a top-hatted gentleman leans towards an elegantly dressed woman, while a child in an oversized hat brings an unexpectedly playful note to the lower right. Above them, the name “GENIÈVRE LA CROIX ROUGE” commands the poster in emphatic lettering, its red-cross emblem set against a palette of burnt orange, warm beige, gold and black.

The poster belongs to the flourishing graphic culture of fin-de-siècle Belgium, when distinctions between fine art, illustration and advertising were becoming increasingly porous. Rassenfosse, a Belgian artist known for drawing and printmaking, brought refined line and decorative control to commercial imagery as well as to more conventionally artistic subjects. Here, branding is not treated as a separate caption added to a picture; words, figures, colour and emblem are organised as a single design. The result reflects a period in which the illustrated poster had become a conspicuous feature of modern urban life, competing for attention through memorable silhouettes and economical visual storytelling.

A closer look

The composition is asymmetrical but carefully balanced. The seated man provides its darkest and most sharply defined form: his black top hat, coat and polished cane establish a strong diagonal through the central group. Beside him, the woman’s lighter costume breaks up the warmer ground. Her polka-dotted dress, gloves and poised posture introduce a mixture of pattern and fine detail, while the closeness of the pair suggests animated conversation rather than a formal portrait. Their gestures give the advertisement the air of a fleeting social encounter.

At the lower left, a pale table and small dish establish the café-like setting with very little descriptive apparatus. Rassenfosse leaves much of the background open, flattening the space so that the figures read immediately from a distance. The child at lower right acts almost like a visual counterweight to the adult group: the broad hat and lively stance interrupt the otherwise urbane arrangement, preventing the scene from becoming too ceremonious. This contrast between polished adult fashion and comic youthful presence gives the design much of its character.

Typography structures the upper and right-hand portions of the poster. The principal name stretches prominently across the top, while the cross symbol functions as both punctuation and brand mark. A narrower list at the right advertises related drinks, including “Amer Wodon”, “Bitter Wodon”, “Elixir”, “Liqueur de Spa” and “Bitter Franco-Russe”. These lines create a vertical rhythm beside the figures, balancing the concentrated social scene with a column of commercial information. A thin beige margin further contains the design, sharpening the impact of its warm colour blocks and dark contours.

Context and significance

Genièvre is a juniper-flavoured spirit associated particularly with Belgium and the Netherlands, and the poster places its brand within an atmosphere of fashionable consumption. Rather than concentrating on a bottle or serving ritual, Rassenfosse sells a social world: stylish dress, conversation, amusement and public leisure. This approach was well suited to late nineteenth-century advertising, in which a recognisable mood or character could make a product memorable as effectively as descriptive text.

What distinguishes Genièvre La Croix Rouge is the ease with which it accommodates several registers at once. It is decorative without becoming static, commercially direct without surrendering pictorial wit, and richly coloured despite its relatively restrained range of tones. The small dish, reflective cane, spotted fabric and oversized hat reward close inspection, while the bold title and red emblem preserve the poster’s immediate graphic force.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
