Published in 1982 from survey work completed in 1971, the US Geological Survey’s “Bedford” presents this historic Pennsylvania county seat with the clarity and authority of the classic 1:24,000 topographic quadrangle. Centered on Bedford and its surrounding countryside, the map captures a landscape poised between Appalachian upland and settled valley, where roads, railroads, streams, wooded slopes, and clustered neighborhoods are rendered in disciplined cartographic detail. Its title is spare, but the place it describes is richly layered: Bedford was long a strategic gateway through the Alleghenies, associated with early frontier roads, military movement, mineral springs, and later highway-era travel. The map freezes that geography as it stood in the early 1970s, before later decades of development altered the balance between town, farmland, and forest.

The United States Geological Survey, founded in 1879, brought a scientific precision to American mapping that made sheets like “Bedford” indispensable to engineers, planners, geologists, foresters, hikers, and historians alike. Its topographic language is both practical and elegant: contour lines articulate the folds and slopes of the land, while color distinctions separate water, woodland, roads, built-up areas, and cultural features. Around Bedford, this system reveals not merely where things are, but how the terrain itself has shaped settlement. The town occupies a relatively favorable position among ridges, streams, and transportation corridors, while the surrounding highlands rise in measured intervals. The result is a map that reads like a portrait of landform and human adaptation, drawn with the disciplined restraint characteristic of USGS cartography.

The region shown is defined by rolling hills, wooded ridges, and narrow valleys typical of south-central Pennsylvania’s Appalachian landscape. Streams and rivers thread through the terrain, gathering in lowlands and marking natural routes through otherwise difficult country. Raystown Lake and related waterways evoke the broader hydrological character of the area, while highland features such as Blue Knob point to the dramatic relief nearby. Contours, hachures, and subtle shading make the elevation changes immediately legible, showing where roads climb, where valleys open, and where forested ground gives way to settled land. For anyone interested in landscape history, the map offers a remarkably detailed view of drainage, slope, and vegetation at a moment when rural Pennsylvania still retained much of its older geographic pattern.

Bedford itself appears as the principal populated place, but the surrounding names—Cessna, Manns Choice, and other smaller communities—give the map its regional texture. These towns and villages are tied together by a network of roadways, including major interstate routes, local roads, and older corridors that reflect generations of movement across the mountains. Railroads, too, mark the continuing importance of freight and regional connection, while symbols for parks, recreation areas, forests, and developed zones reveal a landscape of mixed use. The map’s infrastructure is especially compelling: highways curve with the terrain, streams dictate crossings, and settlements cluster where transportation, water, and workable land coincide. It is a precise record of how modern mobility was laid over a much older Appalachian geography.

As a historical document, “Bedford” is particularly valuable for understanding land use and development in the early 1970s, then published for official circulation in 1982. Comparing this map with present-day imagery reveals changes in suburban growth, roadway expansion, recreational development, and the shifting edges of forest and farmland. Yet the deeper structure of the place remains visible: Bedford’s valley setting, the surrounding ridges, and the enduring logic of stream courses and mountain passes. The map also carries echoes of the area’s earlier history, from frontier routes and county-seat life to mineral springs tourism and the long role of Bedford as a stopping point across Pennsylvania. It is at once a technical survey and a quietly evocative record of a distinctive Appalachian townscape.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
