Published in 1967 from 1965 mapping, the US Geological Survey’s “Lewisburg” presents a finely observed mid-century portrait of central Pennsylvania at the classic 1:24,000 scale. Centered on Lewisburg and West Lewisburg, the map records a landscape where town, river, road, railway, field, and forest meet in a carefully measured composition. Its contour lines articulate the rolling relief of the Susquehanna Valley, while green woodland tinting distinguishes the forested slopes and ridges that frame the settled lowlands. More than a practical topographic sheet, it is a revealing historical document: a snapshot of Lewisburg and its surrounding townships before later decades of suburban expansion, infrastructure change, and evolving land use reshaped portions of the region.

The United States Geological Survey brought to this map the disciplined visual language that made its quadrangles indispensable to planners, engineers, conservationists, hikers, and historians alike. Founded in the late nineteenth century, the USGS became synonymous with rigorous national mapping, translating field survey, aerial observation, and geodetic control into maps of remarkable clarity. On the “Lewisburg” sheet, that institutional precision is evident in the measured spacing of contours, the hierarchy of roads and railways, the marking of streams and landmarks, and the unobtrusive survey grid that anchors the whole terrain. The result is a map that balances scientific exactitude with an understated elegance, making the everyday geography of Union County appear both legible and richly textured.

Lewisburg itself appears as the principal urban focus, set near the Susquehanna River and connected to surrounding communities by a network of roads, rail lines, and local routes. West Lewisburg lies nearby, while Buffalo Township and Kelly Township occupy part of the wider civic and rural pattern. To the east, the map reaches toward Milton and White Deer Township; to the west, toward the direction of Mifflinburg and the agricultural landscapes of central Pennsylvania. The map captures a regional rhythm characteristic of the area: compact towns positioned along transportation corridors, farmsteads and open land spread across valley floors, and wooded ridges rising beyond. It is a geography shaped by water, settlement, and the long continuity of local movement.

The Susquehanna River and its tributaries give the map much of its structure and historical resonance. As one of the great rivers of the eastern United States, the Susquehanna has long influenced Indigenous travel routes, colonial settlement, agricultural development, canal and rail corridors, and modern town planning. On this topographic sheet, the river system is not merely a boundary or scenic feature, but the organizing spine of the landscape. Smaller streams and drainage lines reveal how water descends from hill country into the broader valley, while floodplains, crossings, and road alignments suggest the practical negotiations between human infrastructure and natural form. The blue waterways and brown contours together make visible the hydrological logic beneath the region’s settled appearance.

Limestone Mountain and the surrounding uplands lend the sheet its stronger topographic drama, their slopes rendered through dense, expressive contouring and forest tint. These ridges are part of the folded Appalachian terrain that gives central Pennsylvania its distinctive alternation of valleys, hills, and long wooded heights. The map’s green-shaded areas emphasize the persistence of woodland around the more open agricultural and urban zones, preserving a sense of the region’s natural resources as they stood in the 1960s. Roads thread through gaps and along gentler grades, while railways and settlements favor the more navigable valley corridors. In this way, the “Lewisburg” quadrangle quietly tells a larger story: how geology, water, vegetation, and human ambition shaped a Pennsylvania landscape.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
