Published with a 1955 imprint from 1954 mapping, “Paris West” presents a finely resolved mid-century portrait of Paris, Kentucky, and the surrounding Bourbon County countryside. Produced by the United States Geological Survey at the detailed 1:24,000 scale, the map belongs to the celebrated tradition of American topographic quadrangles: precise, practical, and quietly elegant. Paris appears as the principal settlement, set within the gently undulating Bluegrass landscape for which central Kentucky is renowned. Roads, streams, built-up areas, and rural lanes are arranged with the disciplined clarity characteristic of USGS cartography, offering a snapshot of the town and its hinterland at a moment when postwar development was beginning to reshape many American communities.

The US Geological Survey, founded in 1879, became one of the most important cartographic institutions in the United States, creating maps that served engineers, planners, geologists, farmers, hikers, and local governments alike. By the 1950s, its topographic sheets had achieved a highly refined visual language: contour lines to describe relief, standardized symbols for roads and buildings, and careful hydrographic detail for creeks, rivers, and drainage patterns. In “Paris West,” that language transforms Bourbon County into an intelligible terrain of slopes, valleys, waterways, and human settlement. The result is both technical and evocative, a document made for utility that now reads as a historical record of how mid-century Kentucky understood and organized its land.

Paris, Kentucky, occupies a special place in the cultural geography of the Bluegrass region. Founded in the late eighteenth century and named in honor of French support during the American Revolution, the town became closely associated with Bourbon County’s agricultural prosperity, horse farms, and historic architecture. On this map, Paris is not presented as an isolated urban center, but as part of a broader rural system: roads radiate outward, streams cut through the rolling ground, and open country surrounds the town. The map preserves the relationship between settlement and landscape before later decades of suburban expansion, making it especially compelling for anyone interested in Kentucky history, genealogy, land ownership, or the evolution of small-town America.

The topographic character of the sheet is central to its appeal. Contour lines reveal a landscape of rolling hills, shallow valleys, and subtle elevation changes rather than dramatic mountain relief. This is the terrain of the inner Bluegrass: fertile, gently folded, and shaped by countless small waterways that feed the larger drainage systems of central Kentucky. The careful marking of rivers and streams helps convey how watercourses influenced roads, farms, and settlement patterns. Even where the land appears calm at first glance, the contours show its quiet complexity. Such details allow the viewer to read the countryside almost three-dimensionally, tracing ridgelines, lowlands, and the practical routes chosen by generations of residents.

As a mid-1950s document, “Paris West” is rich with historical context. It captures Bourbon County during a period when automobiles, improved roads, and postwar economic shifts were altering rural life, yet before many later patterns of commercial growth and residential spread had fully taken hold. Industrial sites, transportation corridors, recreational areas, and local landmarks—where shown—would have formed part of the working geography of the community. The map therefore functions as more than a guide to terrain: it is a record of infrastructure, land use, and civic identity at a particular moment in time. For collectors, historians, and admirers of Kentucky’s Bluegrass country, it offers a refined and revealing view of Paris and its surrounding landscape.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

We work with interior designers, hospitality businesses, property professionals, offices and corporate buyers on individual pieces and larger coordinated projects.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
